Letter from Washington: Why Bloomberg can't win
International Herald Tribune | 7/8/07 | Albert R. Hunt - Bloomberg News Service

There are two pretty safe bets about Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York: He will be a forceful presence in America for a long time, and he will not be president of the United States.

(snip)

"We have a pretty active two-party system now that will produce two candidates with real differences," said Jeffrey Bell, a longtime Republican activist. "There is no big need for an alternative." Bill Carrick, a Democratic political strategist in California, said, "Independent presidential candidates are just spoilers."

(snip)

Independent voters now make up almost 30 percent of the electorate, and what this survey also showed was that one-third of those voters said they definitely wouldn't support this independent candidate. It's not a winning formula when one-third of one's normal political base is opposed to one's candidacy. Furthermore, based on other data, some of those potential backers might reconsider when they discover that Bloomberg is relatively hawkish on the Iraq war.

(snip)

Clinton, many Democrats fear, has a low ceiling and might be hard-pressed to capture 50 percent of the vote in a two-way contest. That's true, yet she also has a high floor. With the fervent backing of many minorities, women, yellow-dog (i.e., reliable) Democrats and "Clintonistas," she'll get 40 percent of the vote in a multi-candidate field.

In order to win, which is the only reason Bloomberg would run, the Republican candidate, whoever he was, could not take more than 20 percent of the vote. That's not going to happen.

The only thing Bloomberg could achieve is to allow Hillary Rodham (Clinton) to win with significantly less than half the vote.

That would be a most abominable case of history repeating itself. A Bush + a 3rd party candidate = a Clinton.

If this were a practical joke, it would be a good one.

Well, you need a megalomaniacal self-financing Billionairie. It is a fairly short list, and Michael Bloomberg is on the top of it.

Hillary! Rodham (Clinton) will never get over 47% of the vote. So the only way she can be President is if somebody else gets 6%+ of broad-based support.
