The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) is warning of imminent terrorist attacks in Indonesia, possibly in Bali.Australians are being urged not to travel there with intelligence reports suggesting terrorists are planning attacks against western targets.
The Department warns the attacks could happen at any time and Australians in Indonesia should avoid known targets.
"There have been recent arrests of high level terrorist operatives in Indonesia, but we assess terrorists are continuing active planning of attacks," the Department said in a statement.
"These attacks could take place at any time and could be imminent. Australians should consider this information carefully when considering travel to Indonesia.
"Terrorist attacks against Westerners in Bali and Jakarta indicate that these areas are a priority target for terrorists in Indonesia."
Stay safe.
ugh. I’m supposed to be heading to Jakarta in September with my wife and daughter to visit family. This advisory isn’t helping my trepidation. :(
Must be those pesky Methodists again.
I heard it was the Presbyterians.
The Balinese are a Hindu minority, in contrast to the rest of Indonesia’s peaceful Islamic majority. It must be one of those Hindus... [/Sarc.]
I wouldn’t worry about it, go ahead and visit, you’ll have a nice time, there is greater risk of being killed in a terrorist attack in London than there is in Jakarta. I’m not saying there won’t be a terrorist attack in the future, there probably will, just as there probably will in London, Paris, Thailand, New York or Toronto or any place else.
Since the Bali bombing the Aussie government has been hyper sensitive about warning about “imminent” terrorist attacks in Indonesia, there have been five bomb attacks in Indonesia since 2002, how does that compare to the UK for example.
Travel to Indonesia, take the same precautions you would in any other foreign country and enjoy visiting one of the most fascinating if at times exasperating places on earth.
