Wildwood's famous boardwalk could be underwater. Smog in the suburbs, heat-related deaths in Newark and beetle infestations in the Pinelands all could worsen. The Holland Tunnel could be closed every five years on average - because of flooding.
Or New Jersey could become a nationwide leader by passing "the strongest, global warming legislation in the country." That was the choice outlined today by Suzanne Leta Liou, global warming and clean energy advocate for the non-profit group Environment New Jersey, who strongly urged the latter course of action.
"If we don't take drastic action, global warming will touch every corner of New Jersey," Liou said at a news conference at the Statehouse in Trenton. She unveiled a 40-page report detailing how unchecked global warming could degrade the quality of life in the Garden State, from beaches lost to rising sea level to worsening smog to the decline of such species as the red knot, a migratory bird. Some of its more dire predictions, such as a two-foot sea level rise that would swallow 1 percent of the state's land area, might take until the start of the next century to materialize. Others could occur more quickly: deaths from heat exhaustion and heat stroke could triple by 2020 in Newark, where temperatures are about five degrees hotter than in rural areas. The central counties of Somerset, Hunterdon, Ocean and Mercer could see smog-related deaths increase by 6 percent by 2050. Liou urged support for a pair of bills (A3301 and S2114) that would require the state DEP to develop a plan to progressively reduce pollution responsible for global warming, starting with a reduction to 1990 levels by 2020. Both bills have been approved by the environment committees in their respective houses and face further review by other committees.

The common blue meadow violet -- which the state Legislature made the official state flower in 1971 -- could be done in by heat, drought, deluge and invasive non-native pests, The Record reports.

The economies of the other 49 states thank you profusely.
Thanks. If a few businesses want to move up here to Vermont, it’s not exactly business friendly, but it’s a lot less corrupt than New Jersey. And it’s a lot more beautiful.
We have room in Florida, and this state is VERY business friendly. :)

Politicians are falling for this kind of BS all over the country.
Will the last employer to leave New Jersey please turn out the lights...
Please don't tell them that!
They'll come here and bring their taxes and socialist mentality with them.
This is a myth, too. Newark only seems hotter than its surrounding areas because its temperatures are recorded on the tarmac at Newark Airport.
If they took the readings across the Turnpike on the piers at Port Newark/Elizabeth -- where there is often a stiff breeze blowing in off Newark Bay -- then the temperatures in Newark would be about ten degrees cooler.

From the amount of those darn violets I continuously rip from my gardens, I really doubt they are in any danger. They are worse than dandelions.
Paging governor "crash" Corzine...
Not to mention the garbage the state of New York dumps offshore and resurfaces on NJ beaches. |
But I think that'll stop after today's "Live Earth" event.
the great peoples’ republic of nj.....
socialists’ paradise....run and done by lib/dems determined to destroy the state!!!!!
While I am not even remotely interested in their Socialist mentalities - and I see it in the people of Pa when I visit - I don’t mind business moving here for us, but I do share your views on the subject.
I drove I-95 up to Maine in May this year, and the NE above NY looked like a wasteland of closed factories - and with the propaganda billboards lined up along the way there was an eerie resemblance to the Soviet style political/public life when I was briefly in St. Petersburg, Russia.
I would like to put one up that had the definition of “decadent” on it. - fallen from a higher plane or ideal.
Pretty soon, all of the NE outside of the tri-state area won’t have 20 delegates left.
but hey, they will have that great nanny state going on for them...
