Former state senator collects signatures to stop city payroll deductions for unions

A group of Greeley residents and a conservative think tank are trying to stop the city of Greeley from deducting union dues from city employees' paychecks.

The proposed ordinance would limit what money the city could take out of city employees' paychecks.

"It's a good-government ordinance," Owen said. "What it says is that the city of Greeley cannot deduct from an employees' paycheck for causes other than what the law says."

Under the proposed ordinance, the only deductions that would be allowed would be taxes, garnishments and charitable donations, which would have to be reauthorized by the employee every year.

Owen added there are costs associated when the city transfers funds to a union after it withholds money from an employee's paycheck and that taxpayers have to foot that bill.

"Why should taxpayers pay for union dues?" he said.

"Government should get out of the business of politics," Caldara said. "It should not be doing bookkeeping for any organization."

I love it! Great idea! Let see how much money the unions would get directly from their members, after each member is given their paycheck? I would think the contributions to the unions would go way down? Ha-ha-ha!

What a novel idea! (sarc) Unions must control the city for this to have been in effect for so long.

The union bosses would get much less money if the dues were optional.
