Left Coast Times Targets Fred (Fred's pro-abortion canard)
AMERICAN SPECTATOR ^ | 06 JULY 2007 | AP

The Washington Prowler column has learned that the Los Angeles Times intends to publish a story that would attempt to link former Sen. Fred Thompson to a Washington-based, pro-abortion organization. Thompson, through a spokesman, is said to go on the record in the story as having no recollection of ever doing work for the organization in question during a period in 1991 when the first Bush administration was in power.

During that time, Thompson, was "of counsel" at the Arent Fox law firm in Washington, D.C. (meaning he was not a partner, but was provided an office for his use, in part because Thompson's own practice was based in Nashville, TN), and was used by the firm's partners as a "draw" for clients and potential clients, according to a source at the firm familiar with the arrangements with Thompson and others with the "of counsel" designation.

This sounds like when they try to make Roberts sound pro-abortion because he once did role playing with his partners as part of his co-workers work on a pro-abortion case. Guilt by association once removed.

He was pro-choice back then. But if it’s in the LA Times, I wouldn’t line a bird cage with it.

Not surprised. I bet he stays at the Marriott, as well.

He was pro-choice back then.

His comments on abortion were libertarian, which were still within the pro-life movement at the time.

The left is desperate to pull Fred down into their abortion gutter. They were here before the purge, they are at WA, and they are in the DBM.

Trouble is, it ain’t so.

I agree he came at it from a federalist/libertarian angle, generally.

But “I believe that the federal government should not interfere with individual convictions and actions in this area.” is a far cry from the pro-life position.

Oh BOY!!!! They are simply BESIDE themselves, aren’t they?

FREDphobia is rampant...

Has any candidate on either side been THIS feared in years? I’m pretty amazed, actually.

From the piece you linked:

~snip~

Thompson was listed as an “enemy” by Planned Parenthood during his time in the Senate. He was twice endorsed by the National Right Life Committee, and had a 100 percent voting record on life issues during his time in the Senate. He has publicly stated his opposition to Roe v. Wade, federal funding for abortion and embryonic stem cell research.

“This is a nothing story,” says the leader of a pro-life organization based in Washington, D.C. “Lawyers do this all the time, and besides, this was 1991. Thompson’s life record is perfect. Folks on our side shouldn’t get suckered by this kind of crap.”

Well it's not an endorsement for abortion either.

I agree. He’s never been a pro-choice advocate, a la Rudy and Mitt. But he has become more solidly pro-life now. And that is a good thing.

Yeah, well, if this LA Times article appears as predicted, plenty of folks on our side right here at FR will be screeching from the treetops about Thompson's supposed calumny. Save the link to this thread -- we're gonna need it.

It’s open season on Republicans now that Hitlery has solidified her lead over Obama. Mitt Romney has been getting trashed on a daily basis and I suspect that with Fred Thompson it will get even worse. Hitlery can only win by destroying everyone else and her friends in the media are all to willing to help her in that regard.

“He’s never been a pro-choice advocate, a la Rudy and Mitt”

Just because you say it doesn’t make it so. All you have on Romney is a few minutes of video from the 90’s. You should watch the entire debate before drawing that kind of wild conclusion. Had he been a pro choice advocate as you claim the mormons probably would have expelled him from their church. Even Harry Reid seems to have a pro life voting record. Do not trust the Boston Globe.

He’s gonna run, I think that much is clear. We’ll just have to see how well his record stacks up against Hunters.

His record will stack up fine. They’re both good conservatives. I believe FRed coming into the race will take the wind out of Rudy’s sails and quite possibly sink McCain. All conservative boats should rise.
