"Here the Bush administration has a case to make. Border enforcement has dramatically improved. The catch and release program of OTMs (other than Mexicans) was ended last summer, a month ahead of schedule. Substantial miles of the border fence, voted by Congress last September, are being built. Technology provides us with means to seal the border in thinly populated areas in ways impossible in the 1980s and 1990s. Rhetoric aimed at showing a willingness to accept immigrants has concealed these achievements. Rhetoric emphasizing the increasing toughness and shrewdness at protecting the borders could create another impression."
For all of the Bush-bashers out there. Our President deserves much more credit and respect than he receives on Free Republic.com!

Uhhh....that's not true....
One thing he doesn’t deserve is to be our president... He has lied to us and sold us down the river.
Hey, President Bush! “Where’s the Fence?”
Can you please point me in the direction of the substantial miles of the border fence that are being built? sarcasm
Looks like Rove has been busy with the writers he has in his hip pocket. Shame on Barone for not printing the truth about our Border Security and the fact that the bill that was defeated would have made the Border Security worse.
Guess he needs to listen to Hunter, Tancredo, and Rudy who all three have been going around the Country saying this bill would weaken border security not make it better.
What part of the picture that Americans are against amnesty does Barone not understand!
Sorry, but on immigration, President Bush has been mostly horrible from the beginning up to the present. His rhetoric — whether its coining new platitudes to justify illegal immigration, implying that opponents hate Mexicans, or repeating canards about rounding up and deporting 12 million illegals — is thoroughly leftist. He enforcement of existing laws has been inexcusable, and his idea of reform is pretty much the same as Ted Kennedy’s.
Barone’s knowledge of politics and individual districts is almost unrivaled, but he too harbors fantasies about immigration in how this wave is like the past mass wave. He also refuses to say what he really means when he talks of ‘regularizing’ the immigrant flow to meet labor needs. This of course translates into calling for an enormous increase in already high levels of legal immigration, but for some reason he (and most others who share his view) won’t come out and say that.
I worked in the US Customs & Border patrol in their Washington DC HQ in the ronald reagan building downtown from 20021-2004. At the time it was common knowledge that the USA could shut the border in a heartbeat if there was the political will to do so. It was also common knowledge that the directives to keep the border open came straight from the white house.
bush is a lying treasonous sob. He should be smacked upside the head and kicked in the pants.
never mind the stupid NAU sh-t.
Uhhh...you're right! And some of what was built was found to be 'in' Mexico; not on the border. Sheesh!
Jorge Boosh receives the credit he has earned.
What about Mexicans?
Substantial miles of the border fence, voted by Congress last September, are being built.
Thirteen miles is substantial?
For all of the Bush-bashers out there. Our President deserves much more credit and respect than he receives on Free Republic.com!/
Even if you have to lie and spin to claim such, apparently.
“Technology provides us with means to seal the border in thinly populated areas in ways impossible in the 1980s and 1990s”
***
We don’t need technology — we need a decent fence, more border security and a willingness to resist political correctness and deport the illegals who are already here. This is not brain surgery, folks.
Chertoff should be fired immediately for his "I can't enforce the law...I haven't the tools" remarks....
Bush has failed to lead and has lost the trust of the scores that once supported him and would march in the rain and lightening to show that support...
..............shame on him for turning his back on legal Americans....those that put him in office.

Another Dual Citizenship-Working-for-La Raza:
[cough] "Our #1 job priority is to give Amnesty to [cough] all terrorists,
so we only built thirteen miles of fence [cough]."
So, according to you, should I not "credit" the President with our current climate?
Maybe you don't have any self-respect but no one who back stabs me ever, ever retains my respect.
I resent Barone’s comments on this site. I am not a Bush Basher and never have been. I have been a supporter since 1994 but on the Immigration issue he is dead wrong same with the visit to the Mosque.
The threads were not filled with attacks on the President, they were filled with facts and frankly activism to get people to call their Senators and put pressure on them to kill this bill.
This was Americans putting Country before Party and Barone should be ashamed to have swallowed the koolaid of one Mr. Rove. It is obvious this morning with Novak and now Barone that Mr. Rove has been busy.
We are paying Rove’s salary for him to lose emails, put pressure on Senators to vote for illegal immigration and less border security, to withhold money from candidates that are opposed to the President on Immigration, and everything else political. No wonder he lost the emails from his WH computer — doesn’t want Republicans to see what he has been up to!
Is this waht you mean when you say "substantial miles"?
Sorry, that dog wont hunt.
The president is either ill advised over the entire illegal entry issue, or he is allowing what he deems to be "compassion" to over-ride what is in the best interest for this country. He madde a major error in getting behind this latest Senate Bill, a major miscalulation and a major error in judegement. he misjudged the sense of the people and their abject, fed-up attitude about the border and the absolute need for rigid and tough enforcement now.
That is what Barone, Novak, and some of the rest are missing. Most of us on here that are so opposed to this bill and now the President for pushing it were his supporters who worked so hard to get him elected.
As far as I am concerned, this Administration abandoned supporters for illegals — don’t think there is anyway else to say it.
I applaud President Bush for confronting the toughest issues that have been passed on to future generations by previous administrations. Hooray President Bush!
Until we have security and some semblance of border control, most Americans will not support any benefits, amnesty, or whatever you want to do to help the illegal immigrant. This is the basic problem with your philosophy and those who supported the legislation. Security first. Then we will listen to other changes.
You need to impress upon us that you care more about us then you do illegal immigrants. And some of us have relatives waiting years to get in and the people you support can walk across tonight. THEY MUST GET IN LINE LIKE EVERYONE ELSE!
Here is my proposal. Feel free to run with it.
1. Do the job you swore to do. Enforce the current laws. Support and reinforce the officers working the border. Support a federal law directing local police and other law enforcement to take action to detain and initiate deportation of those here illegally. Jail employers of illegal immigrants.
2. No benefits for those in the country illegally. Exception, those with true emergency medical conditions will receive treatment while their deportation is initiated.
3. Initiate a constitutional amendment to stop the anchor baby phenomenon.
4. Build the fence.
5. Change the immigration quotas to reflect real needs justified by industry and/or states. Make the justifications public. So the average American knows how many we are allowing in and why. We will support something logical, fair, and needed AFTER our security is taken care of.
Milton Friedman: A country cannot simultaneously be a welfare state and have open borders.
Why is it oh-so-difficult for some people to accept that they are just plain WRONG on an issue?
The President and his minions have this WRONG. They need to heed the will of the American people, who are RIGHT on this one.
Get it , Barone?
Find another foxhole soldier.....this one ain't big enough for the both of us!
It’s even easier than that , start fining and jailing the employers and you won’t have to deport them!
Exactly! Very well said!
God bless President Bush for all the good, conservative actions he has performed and attempted; but, the Immigration Bill, drug from hell by Ted Kennedy and the evil Democrat party operatives, was Abomination.
>>>>>Guess he needs to listen to Hunter, Tancredo, and Rudy ...
Hunter and Tancredo have it right. Some people are falling for Giulaini's double talk on this issue. He's hoodwinking some folks into believing he's aginst the latest liberal proposal on immigration reform coming out of the Senate, when actually he's NOT against it.
Rooty Toot supports comprehensive immigration reform. Always has.
Come to think of it. Didn’t I hear that some bungling was done? Part of the little bit of fence built was in Mexican territory?
If this is true, I am sure it was no accident, if Chertoff and Bush were behind it.
Gee, now it has to come down. They have no real intention to build that fence.
The Bush, elitist globalist agenda, which also includes most Democrats, for implementation of SPP and NAU open borders is in the pipeline and targeted for 2010.
Do we keep needing to ask why there is no fence? Open discussion of the real reasons and confronting the elitist on their mission needs to happen. Trying to ignore the real reasons will help this crowd acheive their goal.
I think he/she left the sarcasm tag off...
The catch and release program of OTMs (other than Mexicans) was ended last summer, a month ahead of schedule.
Mexicans are 99% of the problem, and they are still let go.
Uh...how about this? If the name on the Social Security number doesn't match the name of the employee, you don't get to deduct it?
How hard is it to pass such a simple measure?
“Our President deserves much more credit and respect than he receives on Free Republic.com!”
I don’t think there is anything that President Bush can do to regain my respect.
Has anyone been over to the darkside(DU) to see what the feelings toward the immigration problem is.
Where are the pics of The Fence that is being built?
See post #15!!
Bush is from MY state. And he has totally failed.
He IGNORES the will of the people, including Texans that want the immigration problem solved.
I voted for Bush. I made a best choice scenario.
Face it, as a President he SUCKS.
Fred Thompson for President in 2008!
Me too, I’ve voted for him four times, but I’ve had enough. Sticking up for him, the bungling speech etc. just to have him suck up to the swimmer and push something this ridiculous does it for me. We just have to get through the next year and a half.
They actually think we will believe that was an “accident”.
Just like all those Arkancides were “accidents”.
:p
There are far too many small employers/contractors/businesses who are only too happy to have cheap labor. The rampant runaway illegal immigration will require the fence/control of the border, coupled with stringent very tough employer enforcement before the tide will be turned, and we will se an egress of illegal immigrants.
Something that is too often overlooked, is that illegals have been entering the United States to work during the growing, picking, and canning seasons, for many, many, decades.
However, prior to the 1986 Amnesty, almost all of them went back home to Mexico, each year, when the season ended. The 1986 Amnesty set a very unhealthy precedent, and after that, they all began coming to stay, believing that, they too, would eventually be granted amnesty.
That line of thinking needs to be changed. We have to return to the way it was before 1986, and we need let the illegal immigrants know, in no uncertain terms, that there won’t ever be another amnesty.
We absolutely require the temporary agricultural workers, but they should not be granted a path to citizenship. They need to return home to Mexico after the “season.” We need to allow them to come to the U.S. to work each year, but now, their entry, and exit, has to be fully controlled.
Well I will. We need to increase the flow of legal immigration. Not just from Mexico and it has to be merit based. The illegals came here to fill an obvious demand. Enforce the current laws and the illegals will most likely pack it up and go home. No job. No reason to stay. But this will cause a massive vacuum that will need to be filled. Do it with the best we can get from all over the world. At the same time, laws need to be passed that compel legal immigrants to assimilate.
It's the same here in Florida. I go to a meeting on one side of town once a week. Sometimes I'll sit outside in my truck as I'm early, and every time I do that 2 or 3 packs of illegals cut through the property. I think they are dropped off nearby. They are so obviously illegal, and I know that sounds bad for me to say that without checking their actual status. But they all look and act the same. They are young males, probably in their teens or early 20s. All extremely short, tattered clothes, looking like they did some serous labor during the day. They quietly move down the street, not talking, not laughing, looking down. They are careful to not make eye contact.
The area has several car dealerships in the area that have been accused of helping illegals forge documents and get cars. Supposedly, the dealerships don't even have english speaking salesman. This is an area of Florida that many still call "a racist against minorities" due to its actual intitutionalized racist policies back 3 or 4 decades ago.
Have you read what was in the bill?
You are exactly right, and it ain’t rocket science. This is not about getting the apples picked, it’s about a treacherous political party ginning up their electorate and a clueless president and senators idiotically aiding them.
In the context of “Enforce the Law” . . . the law as it stands mandates building a fence of XX miles. What percentage of the total border does that represent?
Isn’t it less than 1%?
So what is accomplished by Enforce the Law in terms of that tiny segment? And no, do not reply that the whole border must be fenced. If you wish to make that reply, you must make it to Democrats and not the GOP. Even if you persuaded the entire GOP of it you would not get it. So start with the Democrats, and only with the Democrats. When you get all of them persuaded, then talk to the GOP.
In the same context of “Enforce the Law” and punishing employers for hiring illegals, what procedures are employers to follow to identify illegals? They record a SS number and proceed. The SS Administration may notify them that the number is bogus and at that point the employer tells the employee to get the problem fixed and gives him or her 30 days. The employee tells the employer it is fixed and the employer proceeds until the SS Admin speaks up again. Then the employer may fire the person, but it can take 6 months for the overall process.
Do you then put the employer in jail because he followed this process? He complied with all requirements. If the SS number provided is valid and the employee provides the correct name for it, the employer has no way to know. Even if an Hispanic looking person with no English claims to be Robert O’Toole, the employer cannot legally reject that and fire the person. He risks a business destroying lawsuit if the person actually is named Robert O’Toole.
So how does an employer proceed. What does “Enforce the Law “ mean in terms of putting the employer in jail. What was he supposed to do? And again, do not reply that something more must be done for “new laws” when the mantra has been “enforce current laws”. You aren’t allowed to change your tune. And if you DID want new laws, then go and talk to the Democrats first and after you have all them persuaded, come talk to the GOP.
I can only see Chertoff. The other is a red x.
Probably Guatemalans or Southern Mexicans. They tend to be Indian and short. IOW they are Mayans and semi Mayans
