:::FreeRepublic's Threat Matrix:::
US Steps Up Security Following Attack in Britain

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff made appearances on several television talk shows.

He told ABC's This Week program there is no indication of a linkage between the events in Britain and any specific attacks on the United States. "We do not have, at this point, specific, credible intelligence that there is an attack, a particular attack, focused on this country," he said.

But at the same time, speaking on CNN's Late Edition program, Chertoff said U.S. authorities are concerned about the threat of terrorism, especially in the coming months. "We have had a number of al-Qaida leaders quite publicly talking about how they want to carry out their threats against the West. So, given that and given the history that we have had over past summers, with attacks in Britain, I think we were clearly focused on this as a possibility," he said. Full story...

Forces Detain Three Insurgents, Seize Weapons in Afghanistan

American Forces Press Service

WASHINGTON, July 9, 2007 – Afghan and coalition forces working in concert across Afghanistan today detained three insurgents, including a Taliban field commander, and uncovered weapons caches, military officials said.

Afghan national security forces and coalition advisors using accurate intelligence located and killed a key Taliban leader and discovered a weapons cache near Aram Village, in Paktya province.

The Taliban leader slain in the attack was a mid-level field commander and improvised explosive device-cell leader, known only as “Commander Saleem,” military officials said. The commander had led and conducted attacks that killed numerous Afghan and coalition forces.

Saleem also served as a Taliban communications officer, distributing letters and disseminating insurgent propaganda designed to terrorize the local population into complying with Taliban objectives, officials said.

While searching Saleem’s compound, Afghan National Police members found improvised explosive device-making material and a weapons cache located in a cave complex near the compound. In total, forces recovered eight mortar rounds, one can of heavy machine gun ammunition and various IED-making supplies and explosives.

A woman inside Saleem’s compound during the operation was wounded in the enemy crossfire. Troops evacuated her to a coalition medical facility for treatment.

“The successful completion of this mission is an example of how far (the Afghan National Police) have progressed as a fighting force,” Belcher said. “Coalition forces provided only minimal assistance to the ANP during planning and execution of this operation, and the ANP performed all of their tasks flawlessly.”

During an operation this morning in the Qarabagh district of Ghazni province, coalition troops detained two suspects and seized weapons and ammunition.

Credible intelligence led troops to a compound where insurgents allegedly were taking sanctuary. While searching the premises, coalition troops detained two men suspected of militant activity, military officials said. The suspects are being held for questioning.

At the site, troops discovered AK-47 assault rifles and magazines, which they destroyed a safe distance away. No civilians were killed during the operation, military officials said.

“Militants who demand sanctuary put innocent people at risk,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force 82 spokesman. “It is in the best interest of the community to remove the terrorists and extremists who endanger their families.”

Man Arrested at JIA after Gun Found in Luggage
July 9, 2007

JACKSONVILLE, FL -- A man from Jacksonville on his way to Amman, Jordan, is facing weapons charges for packing an undeclared handgun in his checked luggage. The Transportation Security Administration says traveler had a .380 caliber semi-automatic pistol wrapped in aluminum foil, with the serial numbers filed off.

"It was packaged in such a way that we felt that it was artfully concealed," said TSA Federal Security Director Ed Goodwin. TSA workers discovered the gun during a routine baggage screen around 10 a.m. The x-ray machine couldn't identify the object when it appeared on the scanners, so TSA workers had to go through the bag by hand.

Authorities brought the passenger and two family members in for questioning, according to Michael Stewart, the director of External Affairs for the Jacksonville Aviation Authority. The FBI and the Joint Terrorism Task Force were alerted. A short time later, authorities arrested the passenger. He faces state charges for having an unidentifiable firearm. The TSA says the man could also be charged with federal firearms charges due to the nature of the weapon's concealment.

Investigators have not released the man's identity. The TSA says he is 38-years-old, he's a resident of Jacksonville, and he holds a U.S. passport. He was scheduled to fly a United Express jet to Chicago at 11:30 a.m., and then on to Jordan. The flight left JIA on time.

Pirate radio broadcasts disrupt takeoffs from Ben-Gurion Airport
09/07/2007

Officials from the Israel Airports Authority on Monday temporarily halted takeoffs from Ben-Gurion International Airport, due to interferences with air traffic control caused by pirate radio stations. Altogether, the interference is believed to have delayed the flights of over 1,000 passengers.

After two hours the interference ceased and flights were cleared for takeoff. Authorities also delayed landings at the airport, and set a ten minute gap between each one.

This is the third time in two months that airport operations at Ben-Gurion have been halted due to pirate radio interference in the area of the ultra-Orthodox enclave of Bnei Brak. On the 6th of June, all traffic at the airport was stopped for several hours and thousands of passengers had their flights delayed. Airport workers were able to determine that the disruptions happened whenever pirate radio stations were broadcasting nearby.

The next week, a group of government ministers came together to start an initiative to combat pirate radio stations.

Security Breach at Pearson Airport
Josh Pringle
Monday, July 9, 2007

The Greater Toronto Airport Authority will meet with security officials in charge of pre-flight screening today following two security breaches.

An Air India flight was grounded Sunday evening because of a security breach at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport.

Peel Police say an elderly woman carried a pen knife through security to the boarding gate.

On Saturday night, 16-hundred passengers on eight international flights were delayed when a couple made it through security carrying six box cutters and a potato peeler in their carry-on luggage.

“Four guilty over 21/7 bomb plot
All four were found guilty of conspiracy to murder”

CCTV footage

ARTICLE SNIPPET: “Four men have been found guilty of plotting to bomb London’s transport network on 21 July 2005.

Muktar Ibrahim, 29, Yassin Omar, 26, Ramzi Mohammed, 25, and Hussain Osman, 28, were convicted at Woolwich Crown Court of conspiracy to murder.

The men had tried to detonate rucksacks laden with explosives on the Tube and a bus, killing themselves and passengers.

But the bombs failed to go off sparing the city a repeat of the horrors of the 7/7 attacks, two weeks earlier.

Hairdressing products

The events of 21 July followed a fortnight of apprehension for Londoners and a period of high alert for emergency services.

Widespread chaos and panic were brought to the capital, with the London transport network brought to a standstill.

The jury heard the four defendants claimed the bombs covered in shrapnel were fakes, and their actions had been intended as a protest against the war in Iraq.

The failure of those bombs to explode owed nothing to the intention of these defendants, rather it was simply the good fortune of the travelling public that day that they were spared
Nigel Sweeney QC

After a six-month trial, the jury unanimously found Ibrahim, Omar, Mohammed and Osman guilty of conspiracy to murder.

Jurors will continue their deliberations on the two other defendants, Manfo Kwaku Asiedu, 34, and Adel Yahya, 24, on Tuesday.

The judge, Mr Justice Fulford QC, has said he would accept a majority verdict of 10 to 2.

The guilty four, who were all born in East Africa and came to the UK in the 1990s, stocked up on large quantities of hydrogen peroxide from hairdressing suppliers, ahead of 21 July 2005.

Omar’s eighth-floor flat in New Southgate, north London, was turned into a bomb factory.”
