“If the federal government wanted to fix these problems, they could. “
The ease of counterfeiting an identity has a lot to do with the residual liberty residents of the USA have. Coming up with a counterfeit-proof system of identification will threaten that liberty. Be careful what you wish for, you may get it.
A better way, that preserves liberty (or its residual remains at least) is this: eliminate the system of entitlement programs that draw non-productive people and their many relatives here.

Ron Paul on Immigration and Iowa
From time to time, Im going to send you my thoughts during this campaign. Your support is so important to me, and I want you to know whats happening.
Today, we had good news from the US Senatenot exactly a normal occurrencewhen the presidents immigration bill went down in flames.
Here we had a vastly expensive piece of legislation that would have made the immigration problem worse, and put more controls on the economy. So naturally, the entire establishment was behind it. It was a slam-dunk, or so they thought. Then the American people got riled up, and despite all the special interests, the pressure, the media, and the money, scared the politicians enough to vote the right way.
Yep. The National ID Card. The politico's have been pushing for it for decades now, but for very different reasons. I heard Senator Hatch -R-UT, say as much on Hannity's show just a couple of days ago.....
At least with your plan, only the hardworking illegals would be in the US.
