MOSCOW (AP) - Russia successfully tested a new sea-based ballistic missile Thursday after several previous failures, a naval spokesman said. Capt. Igor Dygalo told The Associated Press that the Bulava missile hit its target on the Pacific peninsula of Kamchatka after being launched from the submarine Dmitry Donskoi in the White Sea.

According to published Russian news reports, the Bulava is designed to have a range of 6,200 miles and carry six individually targeted nuclear warheads. It is expected to be placed on three new Borei-class nuclear submarines that are under construction.

President Vladimir Putin has hailed Bulava as a key component of the nation's future nuclear forces and boasted of its ability to penetrate any prospective missile defenses. However, three tests of the Bulava ended in failure in recent years.

OK, they got one bomb carrier from a 6 way MIRV to hit, I guess that’s progress.

It’s a good thing the Cold War is over.

I hope we’re creating new ballistic missles and the like. If the Russians get ahead of us its all over.

...proof that Putin and his men intend to be our enemy.

It's built using the famous Soviet microchip. As the dissidents used to say: "The Soviet microchip—the biggest microchip in the world!"

No. Our leadership is controlled by crypto-Libertarians. Their philosophy says that further building the nuclear arsenals of our enemies through favored trade status will turn them into friends. The same people are pushing more rhetoric-spouting puppets to be sure that our next president will do as they tell him to do.

Oh yes it has, including most funding for the airborne laser that is almost fully developed.

Yep. Clinton took the focus off of intercontinental ballisic missile defense and put the focus on boost phase defense (i.e. Patriots). At least they used the funding to better the Patriots, but meanwhile Russia and others were working on their long range missile capabilities. Thank God our President cancelled our involvement with the ABM treaty and has supported the missile defense shield and other ABM measures. If there is a Democrat elected to the White House we will most likely face another slow down and that could be devastating.

Boeing, the prime contractor, has said a House of Representatives vote to slash $250 million from Bush's $549 million budget request would set the project back as much as three years. The Senate Armed Services Committee, for its part, opted last month to cut $200 million. It would fully fund more technologically mature anti-missile systems such as the ground-based Patriot PAC-3 and ship-board Aegis ballistic missile defense.

There was a lot of talk last year about a moon base by 2020. Star wars would work really well because you would have all the solar power you would ever need to zap ICBM’s when they briefly enter space before their descent to target. Plus, unlike sattelites, our enemies would not be able to destroy this defense capability. A dedicated, focused America could do this but right now it’s a pipe dream in my opinion.
