WASHINGTON - President Bush's immigration plan to legalize as many as 12 million unlawful immigrants while fortifying the border collapsed in the Senate on Thursday, crushing both parties' hopes of addressing the volatile issue before the 2008 elections.
Oh no...the main stream media has no bias, no agenda...the truth be damned...they have a party and a president to destroy.
It is Bush’s Bill. He owns it.
“The Buck Stops Here.”
Who do you think was going to sign it into law ?
Yes, it was “Bush’s bill” but the media is being more than a little disingenuous by not disclosing that it was Kennedy’s bill and a bunch of others’ bill, as you point out.
Who was it that said, “see you at the bill signing”?
You’re absolutely right. They should have called it the “Bush-Kennedy bill”.
They all have equal irresponsibility for this piece of merda.
And they all have equal blame. NO one who was for this bill will ever get my vote or my money. Ever.
Make that RESPONSIBILITY.
“AP says BUSH tried to legalize 12 million “unlawful” immigrants.”
He DID.
And he deserves ANY criticism he gets!
I keep thinking it was the same guy who said "read my hips." It's not, of course.
It was the Bush-Reid-Kennedy-Pelosi-Democrat-RINO bill.... LOL!
You damn right it his bill. Now let him choke on it.
It WAS Bush’s bill. He deserves the tarring he’ll get from this. It WASN’T a GOP bill though. The Party (not the leadership, which is damnable, but the Party members themselves) killed this monstrosity, with lots of help from citizens.
makes you wonder why the AP is working so hard...can’t believe it is possible to drive his approval rating any lower than it already is.
It is a democrat bill.
If it was Bush’s bill...it would have passed with the moderates. The man never wrote on phrase of it.
This bill is the end of Bush...now the show trials start with Cheney
It was.
sw
Harry Reid’s line. He used it weeks ago.
It was Bush's bill. And, no, Mr. President, Legal Immigration is not one of the top concerns of the American people. Stopping Illegal Immigration is.

THE PRESIDENT: I thank the members of the Senate and members of my administration who worked so hard on the border security and immigration reform bill. I'm sorry the Senate was unable to reach agreement on the bill this morning.
Legal immigration is one of the top concerns of the American people and Congress's failure to act on it is a disappointment. The American people understand the status quo is unacceptable when it comes to our immigration laws. A lot of us worked hard to see if we couldn't find a common ground -- it didn't work.
Congress really needs to prove to the American people that it can come together on hard issues. The Congress needs to work on comprehensive energy policy and good health care; make sure health care is affordable without inviting the federal government to run the health care system. We've got to work together to make sure we can balance this federal budget, and not overspend or raise taxes on the American people. We've got a lot of work to do.
When they come back from the summer -- from the July recess, before the summer break begins, we'll be focusing on the appropriations process. And I look forward to working with Congress to balance our budgets and to be wise about how we spend the people's money.
Thank you for your time.

It is threads like this that give people standing to claim FR is a bunch of wingbats.
The bill is dead...and too many here are such belligerent red necks that they can’t let it go...mainly because they lack the intelligence to deal with all issues instead of just getting tied in with tunnel vision to one.
Bush supported (a mistake) but he did not craft the bill. If the bill had passed, the same AP would have run stories about how this bill gives “opportunity” to hard working people who just want to share in the American dream.
Supporting does not make it HIS bill...he did not write it...KENNEDY did.
The REAL gem is word “UNLAWFUL”....didn’t see the AP using that term when it had a chance of passing.
"Show me just what Mohammed brought that was new, and there you will find things only evil and inhuman, such as his command to spread by the sword the faith he preached." - Manuel II Palelologus
Very correct. This is an example of rank and file Republicans standing up to the President and Senate leadership.
makes you wonder why the AP is working so hard...cant believe it is possible to drive his approval rating any lower than it already is.
easy.....they and the left want us to stay distracted with this and ignore the rest of the liquidation of America that Bush will bring before the end of his term......they learned their lesson in that Iraq was NOT enough of a distraction to keep us uninterested in this amnesty
Then they call it Bush’s bill (it is, partially). Hey lapdogs; Bush ain’t running in ‘08! But keep playing the same song. Its going to be pretty tiresome by 2008. Rush keeps saying they are setting up for their own defeat. Who could imagine it would come so soon.
The story does NOT properly frame it as the KENNEDY-McCain bill...and it is the first time I have seen the AP tag “unlawful” in a story about this...Bush supported the bill (a grave error), but he did not WRITE a bill that would legalize “unlawfuls”.
The same AP ran stories quoting dems and repubs saying it was NOT amnesty...but as soon as it goes down, the link in ONLY to Bush and say it WAS amnesty.
You lay down with dogs, you get up with fleas.
Add to that, the second sentence of all these articles is that Bush is already hated over Iraq, and now failed at this as well.
Was not Bush’s bill...was Ted Kennedy’s / John McCain..etc.
I am DONE with Bush because he supported it..VERY dumb thing to do....but the AP is LYING about it being “Bush’s PLAN”. OUTRIGHT LIE.
He was the one pushing those RINOs to come out of the closet like he has. And the RATs have always been for this...and it was just peachy to them that W was willing to enrage the public with his arrogance...while they could maintain a low profile on the whole deal...
So is it fair to say “Bush’s Fault” this time?
President Bush pushed for this bill as one of his legacy projects. That is clear. Rush’s theory was that Bush felt in his heart that this was the compassionate and decent thing to do. I think he got some monsterously bad advice. Maybe Rove has a Mexican girlfriend.
Actually...he did. The numerous SPP provisions are there purely because he PUT them there with his proxies.
Recall when Bush said, "I'll see you at the signing"?
It wasn't the Democrats that were going to sign this.
Another thing that I think is odd is how every time Bush needs an allie in the Senate, he has Kennedy’s ear. When he wanted “No Child Left Behind”, a federalization of the US School system that no conservative would have ever come up with- he went to Teddy. Odd
This was as much Bush’s bill as it was Kennedy’s and Kyl’s.
I recall reading early on that two of Bush’s cabinet members were part of the small closed-door group that prepared the language in the initial version of the grand bargain bill and which included Kennedy, Kyl and Graham. One I think was Chertoff, I don’t remember who the other was.
This was reported in the Washington Times on June 7:
“The “grand bargain” was the result of closed-door negotiations between a small bipartisan group of Democrats and Republicans and the Bush administration.”

Same here. Now the defiant politicos should assess the damage they caused defying the voters. For Bush it is a great loss, and rightly so. He abandoned Conservative principles and had no ability to persuade the public. He's now toast.
Maybe in the next 18 months we will get a President with a voice, who will veto profligate spending, manage the Iraq war properly, and slap Iran in the mouth.
But nevertheless, the MSM with such headlines are constantly spinning for the DEMs. This was a DEM bill "supported" by the President. It was not THE POTUS bill.
Also notice whenever the MSM talk about this issue....When it is the DEMs side they are always "undocumented immigrants"....Read this article here...and whenever it is about GWB...they are "unlawful".
Or how about the headlines from a month ago or so "DEM Senate rejects pull out from Iraq" Huh? The entire DEM leadership supported a pull out...it was the GOP minority that defeated the bill.
Well, like they say, success has many fathers but failure is an orphan.
George, "I'll see you at the signing" Bush, legacy will not be pretty.
Republicans need to forget about this and go about the business of finding a TRUE conservtive to run in the 2008 election. That is the ONLY chance that we have of winning the white house back in 2008 is sticking to true conservative principals.
Only if the W [stands for "Weakling" ] resigns and lets Cheney run the show.
It was absolutely Bush’s bill. I wonder if he and Laura ever got invited to Hyannis Port?
And yesterday the msm were all calling it a “bold bipartisan initiative”.
Dubya may not have written the bill.
But he threw his support solidly behind it.
Let Dubya learn another lesson late in his tenure...
Lay down with dogs (Dems)...get up with fleas.
