No Controlling Legal Authority

In trying to lure conservatives into supporting the Senate amnesty bill, amnesty shills have figured out that calling conservatives “nativists”, “racists” and “bigots” wasn’t going to do the trick. So, to gain street cred and pull the wool over our eyes, they’re trying a new trick — pretending as if they’re ‘tough’ on the issue. Even to the point of using words and concepts they’ve never known before, like . . . “borders” and “sovereignty” and “illegal aliens”. (They do stop short of calling for deportation — unless the deportee is Elian Gonzalez.) The following quotes are just a few examples of what we’ve been hearing from the pro-amnesty set:

— “Our country desperately needs to regain control over its borders. (The Senate) bill will help us start that process and will provide the immediate relief on the border that we need.”

— Under the Senate bill, “resources of the border will double together with assuring additional sums for (U.S. Immigration agencies) to perform their functions.”

— “In my judgment, employer sanctions are essential if this country is to regain control of its borders. Indeed, it is our sovereign responsibility to do so.”

— “. . . we are doubling up the border patrol. This immigration bill says we are going to get tough with immigration laws . . . we are going to take care of the backlog; and we are going to blunt the economic magnets that draw these people into the country illegally.”

Amnesty backers are even trying to fake populism:

— The Senate bill contains “employer sanctions, meaning penalties against those who knowingly hire illegal undocumented persons . . .”

— “It has universal application of employer sanctions . . . finally, it has criminal sanctions . . . criminal penalties for pattern or practice violations.”.

— Employers will be on notice that there’s now “a secure system to determine worker eligibility in the United States . . . universal and mandatory verification of documents (will be) required.”

— “. . . there will not be the abuse of workers, employers will not be able to provide poor-quality jobs for people, they will not be able to oppress people, sanctions will keep a magnet from attracting these people here . . .”

Amnesty backers are also trying to fake fiscal conservatism, promising that if we legalize illegal aliens, it’ll bring in gobs of tax revenue! Here are some quotes:

— If passed, Comprehensive Immigration Reform “will be bringing people out of the shadow economy, people will be paying taxes, people will be coming out in the sunshine . . . all of those things we know.”

Like I said, amnesty backers are so desperate, they’re even starting to use the ‘dreaded’ term “illegal aliens”! Here are some quotes:

— The bill “will help us regain control of our borders and avoid a future repressive public reaction that will fail to distinguish lawful immigrants . . . from illegal aliens . . . (the bill) contains the essential provisions needed for comprehensive immigration reform.”

— “There are millions and millions of illegal aliens in this country that now will have an opportunity to start on the road to citizenship. They will have the opportunity to come out of the shadows.”

Only one problem, though. All the quotes above are from 21 years ago — from amnesty backers shilling for the 1986 Immigration Reform Act, or Amnesty Act (Hat tip: Newt.Org). Two decades on and 20 million illegal aliens later, the amnesty nags are back because, while all of the Amnesty Act’s amnesty provisions got vigorously applied, the border and workplace enforcement stuff got vigorously tossed aside which greased the skids for the 20 million here now that the government says are here now because more phone book-sized immigration bills are needed to guard the border.

All the necessary steps were taken since the ‘86 amnesty Act to do nothing. Had just the workplace enforcement provisions kicked in, most of the illegals would self-deport in the face of vanishing jobs. As for border enforcement, you do see large numbers of U.S. troops along the border guarding against invaders — but that’s in South Korea. Along the U.S.-Mexico border, crossing is still a pretty easy career move if you’re an illegal alien, despite that 854-mile fence that hasn’t been built. We need a huge wall of clay pigeon amendments! That should do it.

Border enforcement by the feds isn’t happening but you’re now seeing states trying to make a go of it on their own — over 1,100 illegal alien-related bills and resolutions introduced in all 50 states this year alone (source: Lou Dobbs, 6/25). The bills aren’t the usual sissy stuff or small beer —they range from “employment to human trafficking to barring benefits,” and “states are considering restricting drivers’ licenses, punishing landlords and allowing local law enforcement to ask immigration status.” And “41 states (are) considering prohibiting employment, the magnet for illegal immigration.” Buncha Minutemen!

But if you want to see why states aren’t buying the feds’s lame ‘Yeah-but-no-controlling-legal-authority-unless-we-get-Z-Visas’ bag o’ excuses for no action at the border, Arizona gives you a textbook case. The office of Arizona schools chief Tom Horne has “documented the practice of children routinely crossing the border (illegally) to attend school in Arizona at taxpayer expense” because federal law requires it. Horne figures the feds owe Arizona roughly $750 million to cover the cost of legally educating children illegally in Arizona (Lou Dobbs, 6/25). We need to do something about this immediately. Quick! Let’s regulate talk radio!

All of this is why the good money is on Kennedy’s Mexican Amnesty bill staying dead in the water.

Over the years, it has been my privilege to lead several study trips to the Bible lands. In the months leading up to our group’s departure, we would have a series of orientation meetings in preparation for our trip. Schedules, hotel accommodations, contact information—all could be changed at a moment’s notice.

For that reason, our preparation times always stressed the need for flexibility. A willingness to go with the flow and adjust to whatever changes we might encounter was especially valuable. Life has an element of unpredictability for which flexibility is the best response.

James expressed a worldview of flexibility in chapter 4 of his epistle. While it is wise to plan for the future, we must do so with the recognition that God’s purposes might be different from ours. Instead of rigidly saying, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city” (v.13), James counseled us to flex to God’s direction in our lives. He said, “Instead you ought to say, ‘If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that’” (v.15).

The adventure of following Christ is one that rests in His perfect plans—and flexibility helps us to be prepared for wherever His purposes might take us.

But it was fun to do l a bit over a year w ago when I had an injury & was not able to get around for a few weeks. I really need to divide it up on several pages so it isn’t so long.

someone wrote & balled me out once that they printed it & it was 80 plus pages(they were mad at me & I didn’t even know the person who was printing it out). I thought that was funny but just a reflection of human nature I guess
