Networks hit new lows in grim weekly ratings

NEW YORK (Hollywood Reporter) - CBS and ABC fell to their lowest ratings among the coveted adults 18-49 demographic in two decades last week, as reruns and summer alternatives drove viewers from their couches.

CBS managed to win the week in total viewership, while NBC and Fox -- the most successful last week with original reality -- tied in adults 18-49, according to Nielsen Media Research data issued Tuesday. NBC also had the top two shows for the week in the demo, "America's Got Talent" and "Dateline."

CBS and ABC are the second and third networks to reach their lowest levels since Nielsen's introduction of "people meters" set-top devices during the 1987-88 season. NBC already had its worst week this month thanks to low-rated Stanley Cup hockey finals.

ABC suffered from the fact that there wouldn't be a sixth and seventh game of the NBA Finals as well as low ratings for its repeat serialized dramas and originals like "Fast Cars & Superstars." CBS had its own woes with "Creature Comforts" and "Pirate Master," its two originals. CBS probably will do better beginning next week with the three-times-a-week "Big Brother."

They should just bring back Fox’s Glowing-Puck special effects [/s].

All they need for “Big Brother” is a joint venture with C-Spam, to broadcast live Senate or House hearings on the Fearness Latrine (er, Fairness Doctrine).

What percentage of homes have cable or satellite now? 75%? 80%? More? With all the choices available, why watch the networks? I know I very rarely find myself at the bottom of the guide.

“With all the choices available, why watch the networks?”

Heck, given the rise of the Internet, why turn on the TV?

Exactly. It’s nice to have Mark Levin on, or classical music, or just silence. I cry for the networks....NOT.

If you look at the idiocy and garbage that is being presented as entertainment by the networks no wonder fewer people are watching.

“ABC suffered from the fact that there wouldn’t be a sixth and seventh game of the NBA Finals ...”

Right. How were the ratings for the games that were played?

Go through an evening of network programming and it is nearly all crap.
They are sinking themselves and deserve no pity. Put on some decent programming and maybe they will come out of their nosedive.

By the end of this decade, or shortly thereafter, network television as we know it today will cease to exist.

This week, no nets on Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday. We watched a rerun of NCIS on Tuesday and a Unit show, we hadn’t seen.

Our youngest son came over for dinner last night. The tv was off before he arrived and didn’t go on all night. We talked in the family room with the silent and dark tv before dinner, ate dinner and talked at the dinner table until he went home a little before ten.

We will watch “You Ain’t Smarter than a 5th grader tonight and probably turn the tv off for the rest of the night. For us, Thursday has been a black hole night this entire tv season.

USA has some new shows on Friday, so no nets that night. Saturday and Sunday nights are black hole nights on tv.

We are not by ourselves and see no need to replace our old RCA tv (2 decades old) to watch bs in a digital format.

Potlatch, would you please use your skills to have Free Republic added to the fence in front of the little conservative house? Thanks Dave

You added Free Republic - sweet.

Bring out the crying towel for yet another sad ending:

All but forgotten,
'Studio 60' signs off

The finale may draw in 5 million total viewers

By Diego Vasquez
Jun 28, 2007

A year ago, no one would have envisioned this sad end for “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip.” Last fall’s most buzzed about new drama had a talented cast, a highly respected creator, and fans burning up messageboards months before the show debuted.

But those high expectations quickly fizzled amid low ratings. At 10 tonight, six weeks after NBC officially canceled it, “Studio” airs its season finale, which is likely to draw fewer than 5 million total viewers.

The episode will presumably bring some closure to the on-and-off romance between Harriet and Matt, as well as resolve Danny and Jordan’s situation after her pregnancy woes.

“Studio” is a fictional behind-the-scenes look at a late-night comedy sketch show. Though critics initially loved the show, creator Aaron Sorkin, the man behind “West Wing,” turned off many viewers by taking on political issues like religion and freedom of speech that were “Wing’s” mainstay. The characters’ dialogue got increasingly preachy, and it didn’t help that “Studio’s” supposedly ingenious show-within-a-show was not very funny.

After a decent debut in September, “Studio” had lost nearly half its audience when NBC yanked it off the air during February sweeps. The show, which averaged a 3.4 in adults 18-49 during the regular season, returned in late May to finish out its run.

Last week’s penultimate show averaged just a 1.8 rating and 4.45 million total viewers, second in its timeslot. Though there have been a number of newspaper and magazine pieces lamenting “Studio’s” demise, and linking it to the larger dearth of smart television, there’s little doubt that NBC made the right decision.

The later episodes, though still somewhat political, remained uneven as “Studio” transitioned to a romantic drama. With the network already committed to low-rated first-year shows “Friday Night Lights” and “30 Rock,” there was no room to give “Studio” another year to figure out its focus.
