A company headed by the niece of Gov. Haley Barbour has won bidding for a country club once owned by imprisoned ex-WorldCom CEO Bernie Ebbers. The company, Alcatec, is owned by Rosemary Ramirez Barbour, who is married to Hinds County Supervisor Charles Barbour, the governor’s nephew. Rosemary Barbour said Thursday that her company bid $810,000 for the Brookhaven Country Club. “I think it’s great for the community,” she said. The country club formerly owned by Ebbers includes almost 130 acres with an 18-hole golf course, eight tennis courts, a swimming pool, a clubhouse, maintenance sheds and a home. Rosemary Barbour plans to keep the club open. Eleven jobs will be saved, she said. The deal should close on or before July 10, said Bill Brandt, president/CEO of Chicago-based Development Specialists Inc. Details such as whether the club will be public or private are still being worked out, Rosemary Barbour said. “We’re hoping to grow the membership, and it will impact the community,” she said. Brookhaven officials have said they hope the golf course continues to operate because the city is a certified retirement community and many retirees like to play golf. Also, the course provides entertainment for corporate prospects. “I do know that it will draw people to the area,” Rosemary Barbour said. Regarding Ebbers’ remaining assets, Brandt said his company is close to selling Ebbers’ majority interest in the large Jackson-area based trucking firm KLLM. Ebbers, 65, was convicted of fraud and conspiracy in 2005 for his role in the accounting scandal that led to WorldCom’s collapse. He began serving his sentence in the Federal Correctional Institution in Oakdale, La., in September 2006.

This item is admittedly a bit off point, but Rosemary Ramirez Barbour is married to Haley's nephew. She is also the number three in Hispanic Republican women. She is a legal immigrant from Guatemala. She employs many Hispanics in the many businesses she runs. It is not hard to figure out that she is twisting Cochran and Lott in a knot. Money talks.

Don’t give up. Cochran voted against cloture before, I believe. Tell the staff he needs to do it again, or it’s a vote for amnesty.

810 for all this is not possible. There must be an underlying mortgage.

Here is a list of the 12 “fence-sitter” Senate contacts for EVERYONE to email regarding immigration. Many offices are putting calls straight to voicemail and they can just trash faxes (and letters take weeks to get through due to security). Hit Hill staff where they are so codependent - their Blackberries! Send email directly to staff - not just the generic Senate office mailbox. Contact their Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, and Press Secretary. Make your voice heard!!

For the Democrats, I would strongly suggest taking a pro-union/anti-illegal alien stance (i.e. “they are taking our jobs”) rather than using the conservative national security angle.

810,000 dollars will buy you a nice Split Level on the river here with about an acre of ground.

A club house and 18 hole golf course? probably in the 10-15 million dollar range ,and thats a guess.

Guess you stopped trying to pretend it's the illegals that you're against.

Why don't you just say you hate Spics and be done with it?

"Oh, no, no, I'm just against illegals, plus legal immigrant business owners with brown skin, I hate them too of course."

Really dude, go find some other site to rail against Hispanics.

I doubt anyone is twisting Lott to do anything. Lott is bulletproof, and honestly, so is Cochran. The only way you get into political trouble in MS these days is by questioning whether the affected areas have recieved too much relief, or by defending insurance company actions in the wake of Katrina...those things are political suicide, as the state’s insurance commissioner is about to find out. Other than that, these two are in office till they want to retire.

Talk like this makes you part of the problem. You are saying I hate Hispanics, using an ugly word to make you point. That’s a bit silly isn’t? Psychiatrists would call that PROJECTION.I don’t hate anyone DUDE, I just don’t want people trampling on our laws. Is that too hard to understand and accept. You’re not pulling that liberal trick of putting words in my mouth or jumping from step one to step four just because YOU say it makes sense. It doesn’t. Our laws are there for a purpose, They don’t say everybody can come in EXCEPT Hispanics. They are for EVERYONE. Little men think little thoughts. You’ll never have to think about this issue if you just call names, but I guess you’re thinking as deeply as you can and that is pathetic.

I don’t know if that is true about those two here in North Mississippi.

Desoto county is growing mainly from conservative people getting away from Memphis TN. It’s in the top 30 counties in growth nationwide. We hear mainly TN news, and with Corker and Alexander going no cloture, that won’t help provide any fire insurance on Lott and Cochran.

Yeah, but if Lott pulls 90% of a primary vote in Harrison, Hancock and Jackson (counties) based on Katrina alone.

Well, I kind of think that’s a vote margin that is hard to beat, even with DeSoto. And Lott and Cochran are still popular in Rankin, the other big source of votes in the state. Maybe DeSoto has grown larger than since I last checked, but still, I’ve always thought of it as less significant than the 3 coastal counties, which seem to always vote for the same guy, and Rankin, which at this point actually has more people than Hinds, and votes something like 83% Republican on everything, making the primary important for local races.

Lott’s base is South Mississippi, any challenger to him would have to be able to counteract that, and Lott can’t lose those counties period, meaning that any challenger has to beat him by larger margins in the rest of the state

Believe it!! There was a story on this a while back on SuperTalk MS radio. At the time it was supposed to be auctioned off. The price it was expected to bring was between 400K and 600K.

IIRC they said place might have fallen into disrepair since the Worldcom fiasco. I wouldn’t be surprised to see a story in a couple years where it has been “flipped” and sold for the millions that most here would expect that kind of property to sell for. But I bet Mrs. Barbour has to spend a good bit of $$ to get it there.

Regardless, it translates into $6,230 an acre. Ranch land for grazing cows fetch more than that per acre.
