Immigration bill awaits vote this week
CNN.Com - Politics ^ | POSTED: 6:31 p.m. EDT, June 24, 2007 | AP via CNN.Com

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Senators pushing a new immigration policy appealed Sunday to wavering supporters on the eve of a renewed debate on whether to grant residency to some 12 million illegal immigrants in the U.S.

A fragile compromise failed in the Senate in early June, then resurrected after bipartisan negotiations with the White House.

The bill awaits a crucial test vote this week. With several senators distancing themselves from the proposal, the outcome is too close to call.

"We'll see if between the two parties we have 60 votes" needed to keep the bill moving toward a final vote, said Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein of California.

The measure would tighten borders, require workplace verification and create a guest worker program. It also would lay out a way by which the estimated 12 million people illegally in the U.S. could gain legal status and work toward citizenship.

President Bush long has advocated an immigration overhaul. On Saturday, he urged lawmakers to "summon the courage" to support what could be the last major legislative achievement of his presidency.

"The status quo is unacceptable," he said in his weekly radio address.

But he faces dissension from fellow Republicans who demand better border security and oppose any policy that suggests amnesty for undocumented immigrants.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky, last week said his support for the bill hinges on the outcome of a series of amendments agreed to as part of the compromise to revive the legislation.

Mississippi Sen. Trent Lott has faced critical ads back home over his support for the bill.

"I'm not committed to voting for the final product," the Republican said. "The wheels may come off. But I am committed to trying."

McConnell and Lott both know that if they vote for cloture that they will be able to vote against it on final passage and still see it pass.

They both know that if they vote for cloture, the amendments will fail. They believe that the bill will pass without their votes. Then they can have the “reform” and still go hope to tell the unwashed masses that they voted against it.

The measure would tighten borders, require workplace verification and create a guest worker program.

They always state this like it's something new with this bill. We already have numerous laws that are supposed to "tighten borders" including a bill to hire 10,000 new Border Patrol agents, a bill to require verified identification for everyone entering and leaving this Country and a bill for 800 miles of fencing. This new bill adds nothing. We already have laws that require workplace verification. We already have a number of guest worker programs.

This bill is obviously about none of these things, it's an amnesty bill, pure and simple. Anyone with a brain knows that George Bush and Ted Kennedy have absolutely no interest in tightening border security or workplace verification. What would be the reason they are fanatically fighting for this bill then? Right, amnesty and only amnesty.

Here is a list of key Democrat Senate contacts for EVERYONE to email regarding immigration. Many offices are putting calls straight to voicemail and they can just trash faxes (and letters take weeks to get through due to security). Hit Hill staff where they are so codependent - their Blackberries! Send email directly to staff - not just the generic Senate office mailbox. Contact their Chief of Staff, Legislative Director, and Press Secretary. Make your voice heard!!

These are Democrats, so I would strongly suggest taking a pro-union/anti-illegal alien stance (i.e. “they are taking our jobs”) rather than using the conservative national security angle.

In the Battle of Thermopylae of 480 BC, an alliance of Greek city-states fought the invading Persian Empire at the pass of Thermopylae in central Greece. Vastly outnumbered, the Greeks held back the Persians for three days in one of history's most famous last stands. A small force led by King Leonidas of Sparta blocked the only road through which the massive army of Xerxes I of Persia (Xerxes the Great) could pass. After three days of battle, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the Greeks by revealing a mountain path that led behind the Greek lines. Dismissing the rest of the army, King Leonidas stayed behind with 300 Spartans and 700 Thespian volunteers. The Persians succeeded in taking the pass but sustained heavy losses, extremely disproportionate to those of the Greeks. The fierce resistance of the Spartan-led army offered Athens the invaluable time to prepare for a decisive naval battle that would come to determine the outcome of the war. The subsequent Greek victory at the Battle of Salamis left much of the Persian Empire's navy destroyed and Xerxes was forced to retreat back to Asia, leaving his army in Greece under Mardonius, who was to meet the Greeks in battle one last time. The Spartans assembled at full strength and led a pan-Greek army that defeated the Persians decisively at the Battle of Plataea, ending the Greco-Persian War and with it the expansion of the Persian Empire into Europe.

The performance of the defenders at the battle of Thermopylae is often used as an example of the advantages of training, equipment, and good use of terrain to maximize an army's potential,[5] and has become a symbol of courage against overwhelming odds. Even more, both ancient and modern writers used the Battle of Thermopylae as an example of the superior power of a well trained army defending native soil.

There is also a large political significance of the Battle of Thermopylae, in that it was the first defining moment in which the disunified Greek city states first came together to form a significant alliance. It also possibly signified the beginning of the end for the Persian empire - drawing strength from the Battle, the Greeks began forming assaults against the Persian Empire, as a national body rather than small city states.

Spartan King Leonidas: This is where we hold them! This is where we fight! This is where they die!

Spartan King Leonidas: The world will know that freemen stood against a tyrant, that few stood against many, and that before this battle is done, that even a god king can bleed.

Spartan King Leonidas: Then what must a king do to save his world when the very laws he has sworn to protect force him to do nothing?
Queen Gorgo: It is not a question of what a Spartan citizen should do, nor a husband, nor a king. Instead, ask yourself, my dearest love, what should a free man do?

Persian Officer: Spartans, lay down your weapons.
Spartan King Leonidas: Persians! Come and get them!

Queen Gorgo: I am not here to represent Leonidas; his actions speak louder than my words ever could. I am here for all those voices which cannot be heard: mothers, daughters, fathers, sons - three hundred families that bleed for our rights, and for the very principles this room was built upon. We are at war, gentlemen. We must send the entire Spartan army to aid our king in the preservation of not just ourselves, but of our children. Send the army for the preservation of liberty. Send it for justice. Send it for law and order. Send it for reason. But most importantly, send our army for hope - hope that a king and his men have not been wasted to the pages of history - that their courage bonds us together, that we are made stronger by their actions, and that your choices today reflect their bravery.

I’m sure it was made in exasperation and disappointment, rather than hatred. Hard to believe the President would turn his back on his own core conservative supporters for inexplicable reasons.

That is exactly why it was posted. I shake my head in disbelief over the immigration issue. I am 95% PRO Bush as everyone knows around here. I believe this issue is bigger than immigration. It reveals what politicians really think of the average American. They will sell you the moon and once in office they turn a deaf ear. Exactly what Bush and Senators are doing right now.
