Beanie Babies Save Soldiers' Lives

Van Nuys, Calif. — Carolyn Blashek is constantly sending her gratitude to the men and women serving in the military overseas. Blashek founded Operation Gratitude after she tried to join the military, but was told she was too old. Her goal: to show people in the service that they have not been forgotten back home by sending personal care packages directly to members of the United States armed services all over the world. The care packages include a variety of items from sunscreen to socks, candy to toothpaste. But, you may be surprised to know what the most important item is in the box: a Beanie Baby. That's right. These seemingly unsubstantial stuffed animals that were popular in the 90s, help save lives. Blashek tells me that the soldiers give the stuffed animals to the local kids in Iraq; the kids, in return, tell the soldiers the location of hidden IEDs or Improvised Explosive Devices. The fact that such a small gesture can keep our troops safe in the Middle East not only shocked me, but touched my heart as well. Considering the violence these children face each day, it is nice to know that a small toy impresses them.

These Iraqi kids have nothing, so beenie babies brighten up their day in the most dangerous country on Earth. They believe it's more than a fair swap to point out an IED to a soldier. It's a beautiful thing these soldiers are doing over there improving our security and giving these kids a shot at a better life. It's a beautiful thing that tiny Arab children are helping defeat fanatical terrorists. The whole world should be helping in this but self-interest and true greed are the only motivators the rest of the world knows.

I don't think it is.

Now that this story is out for the jihadists to read, I am sure that we’ll have many of these children showing up beheaded for betraying their religion!!!

I support our mission over there and our men and women in service the world over. But, I strongly disagree with your last sentence that “self-interest and true greed are the only motivators the rest of the world knows”. Just go to the USA Islamic areas and look at how they have to live in a free country like America! Hang out near the super large masque areas and you’ll see how women have to live! In my opinion and what I’ve seen, women do not have a chance to learn or live freely so how can they teach their children? And, by the way, what more can you give than your life as many of our young adults are doing right now? It’s all about preserving freedoms we enjoy and they don’t! Look at America’s budget amounts sent out of our country and the war/military expenses the world over, look how much is given by churches in the USA, look how much is given by donations...and tell me we are greedy! Remember, any government funds are TAXPAYER funded and this money doesn’t just fall out of the air.

FYI: We just held a care package drive at our church and prayerfully packed up 50 boxes for our loved ones away from home. Well over half of our guys and gals are in Iraq or Afghanistan. Every troop in the sand received a Beanie Baby in their box, along with whatever else they got.

Ahh, Beanie Babies. The most overlooked scam ever perpetrated in this country. I knew a woman who dropped 20K on Beanies because so many were led to believe that they would increase in value. A complete falsehood supported by the Ty company.

At least they are finally being put to good use instead of breaking bored housewives.

Thanks for the sp correction! I know it’s wrong without spell check, just didn’t use it. Too early in the morning and got confused with my left little pinky and right weak man digits!

I have a stack of brand new beanie babies upstairs, all with original tags still on them. What is the address to mail them to?
