U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement said the round up targeted criminals whose convictions make them ineligible to remain in the United States.
Sixteen of the 18 people arrested had been convicted of various charges, including drug offenses, assault and battery, possession of a dangerous weapon and larceny, said Paula Grenier, a spokeswoman for ICE in Boston.
Six immigrants had final orders of deportation from an immigration judge but had failed to comply with the orders, Grenier said. Two people were illegal immigrants who now face deportation proceedings.
"Todays enforcement action was first and foremost a public safety operation," said Bruce Foucart, special agent-in-charge of ICEs Office of Investigations in Boston.
Grenier said the immigrants who were arrested were from Brazil, Lithuania, Jamaica, Cuba, El Salvador, Ireland and England. She said she did not know what kinds of jobs they were doing on the island.
Many immigrants from Central America, South America and Eastern Europe work there during the busy summer tourism season.
"Its sort of the lifeblood of this community," said Magee Detmer, who said she hires legal immigrants _ many from Jamaica _ to work at her Nantucket Bake Shop every summer.
Just preying on the tourists Americans aren’t preying on...

Nantucket?
This is gonna hit John Kerry hard when he runs into a sticky bun shortage on his way to the beach to windsurf.

We all have burdens in life. He’ll just have to deal with this burden too.

Let’s see how long it takes the lawyers to circle the wagons around these ILLEGALS.....they’ll be back on the job in a jiffy.........

Some real crapbags were shipped off of the island this morning. It was great to see! Three of these guys were very active, selling the cocaine that American dealers couldn’t sell.
The local sheeple are bleating up a storm, too. My heart is a small, cold stone (insert evil laugh here)!
This was a long day, but well worth it.
Awesome, I hope they weren’t shipped to Boston ‘cause Deval would try to get them freed, or at least meet the ship so he could hug them.
You mean...that on Nantucket....they actually hired...
OFF-ISLANDERS!!!?
Oh, the shame of it!!!
[True joke: in the 1930’s a teacher asked her pupils to write an essay about the Italian Duce Benito Mussolini. One child’s essay began with, “Mussolini is an off islander.”]
How the hell did Mexicans find Nantucket?
El Salvadorians, Jamaicans, Irish, Europeans, you name it - it was a real mixed bag.
Nice ones too! (Hollis Hibbs, where are you?!) I met a reasonable number of natives and semi-natives, and not too many of them seemed to be after summer employment, on the Island at least.

They migrated there from the Vineyard.
