Lead in paint forces recall of wooden toys
· Thomas the Tank Engine items taken off UK shelves · 70,000 Chinese-made playthings may be affected
Thousands of wooden toys in a popular Thomas the Tank Engine range have been withdrawn from sale in the UK as part of an international safety recall following concerns that their paint could contain potentially dangerous levels of lead.
People who may have bought the toys - which were made in China between January 2005 and April this year - are also being advised to stop using them and return them to the manufacturer as soon as possible.
The range of brightly coloured engines, trucks and other vehicles, made by the RC2 Corporation and sold as Thomas & Friends Wooden Railway, is designed to appeal to pre-school children and sold through retailers such as the Early Learning Centre.
Last Wednesday up to 1.5m toys from a range of 22 named items were withdrawn in the US and Canada, and on Friday the recall was extended to the UK, where it applies to nine specific toys - predominantly named after the James character and painted bright red or yellow.
They include a red James engine and coal tender, Skarloey engine and tanker truck. Products painted blue - based on the more popular Thomas character - are not affected. A spokeswoman for the company said that up to 70,000 items had gone into toy stores, although not all of them had necessarily been sold.

China is a mess.
Might make sense to stop buying Chinese product. DownUnder, there is an issue with Chinese toothpaste containing industrial coolant (I think it is Glycol or something similar). Just what you want your kiddies to brush their teeth with, ay.
while I do not buy “made in China” stuff
I was disappointed to see my new Callaway Big Bertha irons were assembled in China. I tore those little stickers off

My 3 year old has a lot of Thomas toys. I wonder if any of them are affected. Since he is well past the stage of putting toys in his mouth I don’t know if they would be harmful even if they did contain lead paint.
Look for these recalled items to show up at flea markets and dollar stores. Shame only works on people who have a conscience.
I am getting back to that point again.
A few years back, a person... of my... acquaintance (yeah, that’s it!) printed up little stickers that said “PROCEEDS FROM THE SALE OF THIS PRODUCT WILL BE USED TO INCINERATE YOUR CHILDREN” and re-labeled a lot of stuff at the local Target.
A devious fellow was he... Devilishly handsome, too...
For those of us constantly trying to buy "made somewhere else", it is exceedingly difficult if not impossible! I just can't find alternative products and you never get the proper information when you order off the net as a last option.
Sad situation. We need to get out of bed with these people before it's too late and we have mass casualties from some incident like the toothpaste thing.
Simple contact can be an issue depending on the amount of lead. I suspect if it had been a large amount, we would have heard about it much sooner.
sounds like a self description..........hehehehe
I looked at the pictures online and it appears that my son does have at least one of the toys. The toy exactly matches the picture. I don’t suppose any other companies make the same toy.
The cargo container on the upper right is picked up by a crane named Cranky. My son loves this toy which he just got recently. Too bad. My wife doesn't always let me know how much these toys cost, but I know they're not cheap.
BTW Thanks for posting this article.
You bet.
I hope everything works out okay.
UPDATE: FDA Warning Expands List of Contaminated Toothpaste from China

It is not just down under with the chinese toothpaste issue!
The Chinese are doing us a favor. Lead paint is better than tin foil. (sarc)
Have you ever been fishing or fired a gun?.
Yes, constantly. Do you have children? They put the toys in their mouths and chew on them. One does not usually practice that with tackle or ammo. : )
Heavily Leaded based paints are banned because of lead poisoning that's occurred due to handling.
As a matter of fact, there was a pretty good discovery channel show on now and then that depicts the ruin of an Arctic expedition that failed. They were able to retrieve bodies from the ice and do a forensic analysis. Turns out that canned goods were just becoming popular and their supplies consisted of canned goods sealed with leaded solder. They died from lead poisoning.
Good point. I have never seen any of my 5 children chewing on painted toys or chipped paint.
We have our hands full with 2 - lol!
