I’ve watched dozens of circumcisions... and it’s hard for me to figure out how the Dr. botched this unless he dropped the darn scalpel on the kid. Who knows?

As I said circumcisions at a later stage (teenagers or later) are often psychologically problematic, especially when related to diseases. An infant circumcision might have spared your uncle the problem of infections from the beginning.

My mom said it was physical pain.

I don’t doubt that it would have helped to have it done early but she and all her brothers and sisters (12) were born at home. Number 13 was in the hospital.

Is the human body intrinsically flawed at birth needing a surgical procedure to make it better? Is it like a physical manifestation of some kind of original sin?

It depends on whether you want your kid to be a helmet or an anteater....

next time you're in a car wreck, have a stroke, are having a heart attack or need to get treated for cancer... go to the gun range.

that study is a statistical joke. Like the one ; if you drink gin and water= get drunk

bourbon and water= get drunk

scotch and water= get drunk

beer and water=get drunk....

therefore water gets you drunk...

I don’t know where this “barbarism” charge came from. I recently had to have this done for medical reasons. I have no idea why it wasn’t done when I was a baby but not having it done has caused me a lot of grief and it was time to correct the problem. For some diseases it is almost mandatory and in diabetics it is very important. For those who have been adversely affected by infections, they will know what I am speaking of. Try looking Balnaitis for a sample of the problems. This is no laughing matter.

Bless his little heart. National Medical Program at its best.

Mutilating baby boys is one of the worst medical practices still perpetuated today. If you are considering doing this at least just wait until your son is old enough to understand the consequences.

yeah. right. I'll take my chances. ooops, already "mutilated" the little one.

I love it when the people that don't get their kid circumcised come in with infections, cause they don't know or care to pull down the foreskin...or if it gets inflamed get phimosis and then need to have some forceps crammed into the opening in order to dilate the meatus.

There are problems with both sides... why not just let those choose and leave it at that.

Sounds like the doc may have used the "plastibell" and instead of tying off the foreskin he slipped and ligated the penis. That would lead to retention, infection and death.

a previous poster was right, without the path report, nobody knows.

My uncle had to have it done as a teen because of recurrent infections and she said he suffered horribly at that age. WHAT?

1) It's nowhere near as barbaric, and certainly not done for the same purpose.

2) The health benefit that circumcision provided in two recent African HIV studies was so striking that doctors felt it unethical to keep the control group from having the procedure done.

1) As barbaric as female "circumcision"? No, but equally as unnecessary.

2) Those studies also ended when the circumcised group started contracting HIV at the same rate as the intact group.

There is rarely any reason to preemptively remove perfectly healthy, specialized tissue. I don't hear advocates of routine infant circumcision promoting routine infant appendectomy, but it would make just as much, if not more sense.

I thought perhaps it had something to do with socialized medicine.

I agree. We had to have my grandson circumcised at 5yrs old. (His Dad refused it at birth) His closed so badly it couldn’t retract....so there was one infection after another. It was painful for him...and very difficult. If his Dad had been around I would have throttled him...for this could have been avoided early on.

He experienced a tremendous amount of pain due to having the circumcision done as a teen. It’s not without precedent.

Like I said, circumcision is so prevalent in your life that you CANNOT disagree with it. I have been in discussions about this before and I find your "agreement because you (and your son) are circumcised" very typical. It is the reason the practice is still so widespread in the US.

I don't like revealing my private life either and the following could get a bit crass but if it can prevent this from happening to just one child it is worth it. My parents told me they wished to keep me the way God made me and I've thanked them for it profusely.

You said you had friends in high school that regretted it and I can completely relate. I too regretted it in high school because I was so different down there from everyone else in the locker room shower. It is only peer pressure that made your friends regret being different.

You mention never having problems with your wife? Well most of the women I have dated confided in me that they enjoyed sex much more because it chafed less than all the circumcized guys. Claims that they could go a lot longer or women that had dryness problems with others but not me were common.

Claims it is dirty or unsanitary or infectious are preposterous. I've never had any of these problems and in this day and age of daily showers I can't imagine basic hygeine being difficult for those in the US.

Circumcision needs to be looked at again and those who just claim it has always been done to the men in their family need to strongly consider breaking that trend. God did not make a mistake creating us with a foreskin.

CIRCUMCISION: Did you know?

The reason the practice was started in the first place was to make it difficult to masturbate

Didn't stop ME! Ha!

uhhh, did I just type that out loud?

Well, if you read the Bible, the same God who created the foreskin instituted circumcision. According to Scripture, HE was the one who introduced it. Tell Him He made a mistake doing that, why don't you?
