Reid says U.S. strike on Iran would be destabilizing Mon Jun 11, 2007 6:27PM EDT
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid rejected on Monday another prominent senator's call for a military strike against Iran, saying a U.S. attack would destabilize the Middle East.
Sen. Joseph Lieberman, an independent from Connecticut and chairman of the Homeland Security Committee, said over the weekend the United States should be prepared to use military force to stop Iran from training and equipping Iraqi militants blamed for the deaths of U.S. troops in Iraq.
Iran has denied supplying Iraqis with armor-piercing munitions and U.S. officials say they cannot prove complicity on the part of the Tehran government.
But Lieberman, appearing on CBS' Sunday program "Face the Nation," said the United States had "good evidence" that Iraqis were being trained to use the weapons at a camp inside Iran. He advocated a military strike in retaliation, saying much of the job could be done with air strikes.
"The invasion of (Iran) is only going to destabilize that part of the world more," Reid said on Monday after speaking at a forum hosted by the Center for American Progress think tank.
"I know Joe means well, but I don't agree with him," the Nevada Democrat added. He advocated continued diplomatic efforts with Iran instead.
Reid's comments appeared on thinkprogress.org, a Center for American Progress blog, and were confirmed by his Senate staff.
Analysts described Lieberman's comments as an escalation of official U.S. rhetoric. Up to now, officials including President George W. Bush have vowed to confront any Iranian networks found inside Iraq.
"This takes it across the border," said Ray Takeyh, an Iran expert at the Council on Foreign Relations.

Isn’t the idea to destabilize?
Hey Dingy, how stable will the region be when Iran has a nuke?
I don’t listen to Harry. His approval rating is lower than mine.
destabilizing
For the Mullahs and Achmedinijahid.
Reid says U.S. strike on Iran would be destabilizing... because Iran has been such a stabilizing force in the region?
Ah yes....but bombing specific places would “destabilize” in a very productive and gratifying manner....
This is the idea - de-stabilize. When you have a$$holes like Reid, etc. say we should do nothing, then we give adi and comfort to our enemies. Reid and the the Dem leadership consider unless we give adi and comfort to our enemies, then we have not done our job. Folks, the Dem leadership should be eliminated. The idea that our enemies can rely on their leadiershp will destroy us.
Harry needs to get off his meds, looks like years of dependency has fried his brain.
Stupid Harry would have us connect the dots after a terror attack and not one minute before.
Suppose he knows how much Iranian activity destabilizes it now?
Suppose he knows how much Iranian activity destabilizes it now?
As though the present course is one leading to stability. Let’s see, a nation that has sponsored the kidnapping and holding of US citizens and citizens of other Western nations, that is currently sponsoring terrorism around the globe, that follows Sharia law and has a human rights policy that allows honor killings and stoning people to death, that treats women as property, and whose leader blatantly states that Israel and America will be destroyed, represents stability. On the other hand, preventing them from getting nuclear weapons will bring instability. Is this what Reid is saying?
Gee, Harry... How about an Iranian attack on the US? Would that be “destabilizing?”
Or would you only urge restraint, telling us that the worst thing we can do is respond because it just creates more jihadists?
We should bomb these training camps even inside Iran.
Bombs? Who? Us? Sorry, we’d like to care but say, can you see the concern in our eye? ( Pulling down lower lid...)
And Hunter says he’ll nuke them rather than allow them to obtain nukes. One is a pansyass senator, the other a real warrior.
How the Democrats elected this guy to be Senate Majority Leader is beyond my intellect. But, I guess it does speak volumes about their party.
