Colorado has a dog training program. The rescue I work with has gotten several of our dogs into the program. The dogs stay with the inmates 24/7 for a month or more until they are trained and put up for adoption. You can also take your own dog to the prison program for training. You have to leave the dog for a month...and it does cost you. If I ever had to be out of town for a month, I would consider taking my dog up to the prison program. The dog would get constant companionship and some much needed training for only a little more than it would board him.
