I disagree. I thought it was a perfect ending...

The guy that went into the bathroom was a hitman. Remember when Bobby and Tony were talking about that you never hear the one coming to get you? The series goes black as Tony dies. He never saw it coming. The whole series WAS Tony. With him dead.... all black.

Interesting thought. You might be right. But I think the whole idea is to keep us all guessing and leave the door open for sequels.

You have the best analysis of anybody. I think you are right on. Think about it. It makes total sense.

That's one way of looking at it. We didn't have to see it...we knew it was coming..

Except it didn't..which leaves the door open for a sequel.

Agreed. But we needed to hear Tony say “what the f-” or Carmella scream or something in the black.

And who ordered the hit? Phil said that they decapitate the head and '...we'll do business with what's left over".

Nope...it's an ending fitting for characters who are going to make millions on a sequel or movie blockbuster.

To think this all started as 'Virgil' (Gandofino)confronting 'Alabama'(Arquette)in TRUE ROMANCE. LOL!

Thank you. You just nailed it. That was what I was thinking after the credits ran. When it exactly happened, though, I thought it was lame. The ending was left up to our imaginations, ala Hitchcock (the best suspense is not what we see on the screen, but what a film makes us imagine in our minds).

Certainly a plausible interpretation (black = Tony dead). I think I’ll consider it the meaning of the black screen, unless something happens (like a movie) to contradict it. That’s better than considering it a non-ending.

You dreamed that. Nothing happened, they wimped out completely. OTOH, we can now coin a new phrase, “That was a lame as the Soprano’s finale.”

That's the "ending" I came up with too. It seemed like an obvious nod to The Godfather. Remember Michael Corleone going into the bathroom to get the gun?

That was my first thought as well and the whole cut-to-black, no audio at all creeped me out. My wife asked "What happened??!" My reply, "Tony just took a bullet in the head..." I loved it and was surprised this morning to see so many people with different interpretations of the ending, especially given the conversation with Bobby about death which basically described the last scene last night perfectly.

Of course I am assuming that I am right in my interpretation! If I am, and that is what Chase intended then I thought it was brilliant. Any other explanation would tend to make me consider the ending horribly lame. Someone on another forum said that the "man at the bar" was named in the credits as a Leotardo. I didn't notice it myself though as I was too busy pacing around the living room. :)
