ABC Won't Tell Who Caused Ecological Disaster

Up to two million tires are at the bottom of the ocean floor off the coast of Florida. They damage reefs, wash up on the beach and create a hazard for beachgoers. How did they get there? Don’t ask ABC News.

With the power of government and the green movement of the 1970s, the process was set into motion to build artificial reefs from used tires. All ABC could say was that “someone” had gotten the idea going.

Don’t hold us accountable! We had good intentions.

The truth is, Ray McAllister, a professor emeritus of ocean engineering at Florida Atlantic University, was instrumental in pushing the original idea forward. Then the idea got government support. According to an Associated Press story, the effort won approval of the U.S. Army Corp of Engineers and local county officials. McAllister helped found Broward Artificial Reef, Inc., the company that organized the effort to build what is called “Osborn Reef.”

So do we send the $3 million - $5 million bill to McAllister or to Florida Atlantic University?

“This is one of those ‘it seemed like a good idea at the time’ stories,” said ABC Correspondent Jeffrey Kofman.

This is what they'll be saying about lowering carbon emissions in about 20 years.

I think I vaguely remember a movement to put tires into the Hudson River off Manhattan so that fish would have a place to hatch their eggs. That was about the time that an idiot judge killed the project to put the West Side drive underground, because he said it might hurt the fish. This was after John V. Lindsay, the worst Mayor NYC ever had bar none, let the old West Side Drive collapse because of neglected maintenance.

Artificial reefs are a great idea and are great for fishing - as long as they aren’t old tires.

Now environmental groups fight stuff like sinking old subway cars for artificial reefs tooth and nail.

Another example of government not having the brains that God gave turtles. I had a Chemistry professor at University of Florida who was so incensed at the idea of replacing lead in gasoline with known carcinogens that he testified before Congress on the idiacy. Think of it, the government “experts” wanted to take a pollutant and replace it with subsitutes that were KNOWN to cause cancer.

The same media who will devote hours to Scooter Libby can’t be bothered to investigate a large-scale man-man environmental disaster.

Liberalism ALWAYS generates the exact opposite of its stated intent. I would not throw an old tire in a lake because it just seems wrong, but some lib genius decides to throw millions in the ocean. Does any lib think past there next self adulation pat on the back?

“Artificial reefs are a great idea and are great for fishing - as long as they aren’t old tires.’

MOve all the tires to New Orleans and build NO up as an underwater theme park and convention center.

Everyone can live on stilted homes.

I testified at the CARB meeting in 1995 or so about MTBE. I asked the board several questions like - Have you tested it at this level? How does it interact with ground water? You know simple things. Well 10+ years latter there are literally hundreds of water wells contaminated and thousands of tons of the poison spread all over Kalifornia. They should all go to jail.

Artificial reefs made from old tires are terrific for finding lobsters in.

As a teen, I worked for the YCC and spent a summer weighting and tying old tires together for a burial at sea in the Long Island Sound off of Smithtown, NY.

This is a Classic Keeper article!

It should be filed for easy reference to refute current and future hare-brained schemes.
