ESCONDIDO: Investigators have learned that a Riverside County man shot and killed by a Border Patrol agent last week was a legal resident, the Sheriff's Department said yesterday.

AdvertisementBenito A. Gonzalez, 40, of Sun City, gave the agent a false name when contacted in a parking lot on Mountain Meadow Road off Interstate 15 last week, said sheriff's homicide Sgt. Roy Frank. The agent was not able to confirm the man's identity at the time and tried to arrest him on suspicion of being an undocumented immigrant.

A struggle ensued, and the agent shot and killed Gonzalez in a nearby field in a fight over the agent's gun, Frank said.

Later, authorities learned the man's real identity and determined he was in the country legally.

Detectives are still looking into whether Gonzalez was involved in a smuggling operation that was busted in the parking lot hours before the shooting. K.D.

Once we give amnesty to all the illegal aliens this kind of thing won’t be an issue anymore and no one will get hurt.

Lucky for the Border Patrol Agent, he dodged a bullet on this one.

A legal resident involved in a smuggling operation?

No kidding?

Just like the thousands of business owners are aiding and abetting these operations by offering them work at very reduced wages of course. And then the business guys send money to their favorite politicians making sure they ignore everything, keeping business as usual, making sure the low wage labor continues.

I agree with you dragnet. Business owners who hire them, and the legions of corrupt politicians they bribe, are the moral equivalent of crack dealers.

The lack of border control is all about drugs, IMHO.
