Bill would help unwed couples - Plan expands rights of all heterosexual domestic partners.

All heterosexual adults who register their domestic partnerships with the state of California would have the same legal rights as married couples, including filing joint state income tax returns, under legislation approved Monday by the state Senate.

Senate Bill 11 -- which will now be considered by the Assembly -- was introduced by Sen. Carole Migden, whose landmark 1999 civil union bill allowed same-sex couples to register with the secretary of state as domestic partners.

"This bill proposes to expand domestic partnerships and benefits to all adult couples who desire to form domestic partnership relationships," the San Francisco Democrat said on the floor of the Senate.

She cited published reports that show four out of 10 babies in the United States are now born to parents who are not married, but may live together.

"It seems to me entirely fair that this Legislature respond to the emerging new definition of marriage and family," said Migden, one of California's first openly lesbian lawmakers, who calls the legislation an "equity measure."

California Democrats continue their legislative assault on marriage despite the fact California voters resoundingly affirmed it in 2000.

No suprise here.

I’m just wondering, why does a “family” or “marriage” have to be artifically limited at 2 adults? Why can’t a “domestic partnership” consist of 1 guy and 3 girls, or any other possible combination? Who is to define “love”?

Nah, the homosexuals haven’t brought us onto a slippery slope of moral decay and depravity. Not at all. /sarc

What is the big difference between registering as domestic partners and a civil marriage? As partners, I guess you don’t have to promise anything, and you don’t have to say anything before a mayor or justice of the peace, or pay him anything, and you probably don’t have to dress up or get flowers or go out to dinner. It’s for people who don’t want to make a big deal about it, but do want financial benefits, and the whole official mess of undoing it too when its over.

The real question and goal is “Why get married at all”?. No reason. Marriage is dying before our eyes. There is no way to stop that from happening except get rid of our tax system and get the government OUT of marriage all together. Get the goverment out of our personal lives and relationships. Leave it totally to the people and their God or not. Of coarse this won’t happen cause people love government and the little tax breaks they perceive themselves to be blessed with while they still give their money to the Pied Piper.

Maybe it’s cause I’m a Catholic, but I’ve always been of the belief that unless you’ve been married by the Church, in a ceremony witnessed by God (Eucharist may or may not be present, but it probably should be), all you’ve got anyways is a legally-binding civil commitment, not a marriage. So what’s the difference here? Seems California is just validating that theory.

I remember a time when that was not only not expected, it was downright disgraceful. O brave new world...

The attack on marriage continues.

This would have save me thousands. I would not be subject to the IRS marriage penalty if we were not married.

So, what’s to prevent any random couple to simply declare this for the tax breaks? For example, college roommates or neighbors in a duplex? Soldiers who are barracked together in a unit?

They have already allowed or are allowing unwed homosexual conjugal overnight visits in CA prisons. Does that mean that any prisoner has the right to have a conjugal visit with "any" unwed person of either sex excuse me, gender as well? Might as well turn the prisons into state brothels. They can become a 'gay' place to live. Who would want to live outside?

Exactly right. Love means many things. Two sisters could live together for example, sexual activity needn’t be a consideration. They love each other. I’d like to include my children in a domestic partnership deal. I love them. Once this door is opened there is no rational basis for denying its application in any number of other circumstances.

“God in His deepest mystery is not a solitude, but a family, since He has in Himself fatherhood, sonship, and the essence of the family, which is love..."-- John Paul II.

The assault on marriage isn't just an assault on our most sacred institution, it's an assault on our creation. God created us male and female and in our joining in one flesh, we are made whole in the image and likeness of God. What God has joined no man must put asunder. May He have mercy on us all...

I thought this was about Bill CLINTON wanting to help unwed couples, maybe helping out with fertility items.

“Who is to define love?”

Unfortunately, this is exactly the reasoning taken by our esteemed judiciary in many of these cases. Hard to believe that our most educated officials can’t think their way past this inane question, but it’s true.
