ACLU: Boeing Offshoot Helped CIA

The American Civil Liberties Union said Wednesday it is suing Jeppesen Dataplan Inc., a subsidiary of Boeing Co., claiming it secretly flew three of the CIA's terrorism suspects overseas, where they were tortured.

The cases involve allegations of mistreatment of Binyam Mohamed, an Ethiopian citizen, in July 2002 and January 2004; Elkassim Britel, an Italian citizen, in May 2002; and Ahmed Agiza, an Egyptian citizen, in December 2001.

Mohamed is being held in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba; Britel in Morocco; and Agiza in Egypt, the ACLU said in a news release.

Mike Pound, a spokesman for Englewood, Colo.-based Jeppesen, said company officials had not seen the lawsuit and had no immediate comment. He said Jeppesen, a subsidiary of Boeing Commercial Aviation Services, provides support services, rather than the flights themselves.

"We don't know the purpose of the trip for which we do a flight plan," Pound said. "We don't need to know specific details. It's the customer's business, and we do the business that we are contracted for. It's not our practice to ever inquire about the purpose of a trip."

ACLU attorney Ben Wizner said Jeppesen could not have been ignorant of the purpose of CIA flights.

The mere fact that they are alive is a testament to our benevolence.

Terrorists will come for the ACLU last, and the ACLU will help them every step of the way.

That is like saying Hertz is responsible when I use one of their cars in a bank robbery.

Why is the ACLU still in business? There was legislation to ban them from getting reimbursed for cases they lose, which would effectively shut them down. Again, Congress has no cojones.

"Boeing helped the CIA."

Indefensible! Now, had they helped the KGB, that the ACLU could (and most likely) would defend.

“That is like saying Hertz is responsible when I use one of their cars in a bank robbery.”

No, there is no evidence the CIA did anything wrong at all, just the word of an enemy of the USA and the 3 guys they represent.

Had something gone wrong, a more apt anaolgy would be like saying the gas station that let you put fuel in your rental vehicle would be responsible.

It is still a service provider being held responsible for the actions of a client or customer. IE, a gun manufacturer being held responsible for the actions of a gun owner, the Ford company being responsible for your drunk driving accident, etc.

I am finally getting around to reading the 9/11 Commission Report, and it reports that some captured al Quaeda were renditioned to Arab countries in the 1990s. I guess it was ok back then.

A company that makes & distributes flight-planning products / data actually supplying flight-planning materials to an agency of the government. Earth-shattering.

<Yawn/>

Not even that. Jeppesen doesn’t own any airplanes, I don’t believe. They mainly provide flight data, flight plans, and charts to pilots and airlines. It’d be like Garmin being responsible because you rented a Hertz car with a Garmin GPS in it, and then used the car in a bank robbery.

Yeah. This is like the ACLU suing AAA because you went to the AAA office, got a Triptik, jumped in your car, drove to your destination, and shot somebody. The provider of that information has no business asking WHY you need the information.
