GARDEN GROVE – Was he a hero? Or was he an over-protective dad?

Mark Dornan saw a man shooting photos of his 5-year-old daughter after the annual Strawberry Festival parade Saturday morning and gave chase.

"I snapped. I was going to get him," Dornan said Monday, still fuming two days after the incident.

Dornan, the son of former Congressman Bob Dornan, was helping his wife run a festival booth selling belts for kids. He said the photographer fled and appeared to be deleting photos from his camera when he noticed Dornan on his trail.

Dornan said he tackled the photographer and wrestled away the camera. He said he saw a handgun fly from the man's pants.

"I go for the gun," Dornan said. "He goes for it. I get the gun. He's laying there deflated, like the air went out of his balloon."

Police detained the man and released him after questioning, but kept the camera.

Dornan said he did not know the photographer's name but said he learned the man was an off-duty Los Angeles police officer.

"No charges were pressed," said Garden Grove Police Sergeant Mike Martin. "We are conducting an investigation."

Martin declined to identify the photographer or discuss the incident further. [SNIP]

Vande Spagg, who ran a jewelry booth at the fair, said she observed the photographer aiming his camera up Dornan's daughter's skirt.

"He was so focused," said Spagg, of Seattle. "He was in this zone, zoning in on the children."

She said Dornan's daughter was one of the cutest kids at the festival.

Leetle bit different from what is implited by the headline.

Somebody trying to upskirt my girl is going to get his head beat in.

I would hope that the latter piece of info is presented during the investigation.

Dornan, a special education teacher in the Anaheim School District, said he was able to look at several photos on the digital camera before handing it to Garden Grove police. He said it appeared the photographer had followed his daughter and taken pictures of her and other children over several hours Saturday.

This has all the appearances of a cop on the NAMBLA payroll.

Checkmate. Unless the "good 'ol boy network" pulls through, the deleted photos can be recovered from the memory card. Hope the guy gets the book thrown at him. Good for the dad - though I fear if I was in his shoes, I'd be facing charges.

Am I an over-protective father?" Dornan said. "I don't think so.

Nor do I.

The OC register is usually a little better then this, as they saved this info as being almost an after thought:

Vande Spagg, who ran a jewelry booth at the fair, said she observed the photographer aiming his camera up Dornan's daughter's skirt.

I say sentence the guy to 30 minutes in a cell..................... with B-1 Bob.

Good for Mark. You don’t want to mess with a Dornan. I’ve known the family since I was a kid.

"Mark Dornan reacts to off-duty police officer taking photos of his 5-year-old daughter at Strawberry Festival."

Flabbergasting! But I will ask the question anyway. It is possible that the officer is involved in on-line kiddie porn? Or worse?

“Or was he an over-protective dad?”

Not when the perp followed her around for two hours and with a witness of him trying to photograph under her dress.

The OC Register has turned left for those that do not know. The editorial page is Libertarian.

If he is the son of B-1 Bob, does that make him B-2 Bob?

From: http://cbs2.com/local/local_story_148192257.html

Excerpted:

(CBS) GARDEN GROVE, Calif. A concerned father seized a police officer’s camera and gun after tackling the off-duty cop at a Garden Grove strawberry festival on Saturday. The father caught the officer taking photos of young children at the event, police said on Monday.

Mark Dornan told KCAL 9 that he noticed the cop photographing his 5-year-old daughter and 3-year-old son at the Strawberry Festival in Garden Grove.

“He came up and tried to sneak a picture of my daughter climbing out of this wagon in a short dress,” Dornan told the news station.

End Excerpt

Two comments:

If the man weren’t a cop he’d certainly have much bigger trouble. They always protect their own. If the man hadn’t been connected you can bet he would have been arrested for the crime of disarming a cop and making him look foolish.

What is a little girl doing in a ‘short dress’? How about pants if you know she’s going to be climbing over stuff?

Yes I mangled my pronouns.

You can figure out which man I was referring to in the various sentences of comment 1.

We discuss this at length on my photography forum. Technically, any person in public is fair game to be photographed. That wouldn't include private property or venues where you have to pay to get in or school functions; you should ask permission first. The only law I'm aware of that applies out in public places is that if the person can be recognized, the photo cannot be sold for profit without a model release.

That doesn't explain all the many shots you see in the news. Maybe there is an exception for newspeople.

They'd really have to prove the photographer's intent in going for provocative shots. It makes it hard for men who just happen to like to photograph kids and take photography seriously. It is easier for me being a woman, I love to get candid/grab shots of people, but if they indicate they don't want to be photographed, I respect that. Still, I can photograph them anyway legally in a public place from public access. One of my favorite photographs was an outdoor wedding preparation, the colors and lighting are so beautiful. My granddaughter wants to do a painting of it. It reminds me of a contemporary Renoir.

I took a lot of shots of an adorable little girl a couple days ago with her mom's consent, then my grandson said something about myspace. I said I don't like to publish photos I take of children on the web, have in rare exceptions, on my photo group.

I need to make sure he doesn't put that little girl's photo on myspace or anywhere else, but the shots I took of him he can if he wants to.

We did have a local case about a year ago where a guy in the park got friendly with a little girl in a swing, was calling her by name, pushing her in the swing, and started taking pictures of her. A relative sitting back and watching got suspicious and started watching him. When he went to his car, they got the license number. The police went to his home and found things like handcuffs and other restraints, seized his computer. I think he got busted big time.
