Orcas Island is a 40-minute ferry ride from where I live on Fidalgo Island. It is roughly 60 sq. miles and has a full time population of about 4500 people. I would say that a majority of the locals vote democrat but they are mostly low-key folks who enjoy their island lifestyle and this sort of thing would be very uncharacteristic of them.
To the best of my knowledge there are no muslims and few, if any, Mexicans living on the island. You can only get there by boat or small plane and living is pretty expensive.
My guess would be kids, kids who probably had no idea how this sort of thing would be taken. No excuses for their sorry little butts, but pretty doubtful it was a “hate” crime.
