Venezuela's Congress says it has approved financing for two films by actor Danny Glover, a close supporter of President Hugo Chavez.
The lawmaking body, which is closely allied with Chavez, said in a statement on its Web site Thursday that it approved $20 million for two Glover productions.
They include "The General in His Labyrinth," which deals with the life of South American liberator Simon Bolivar. It is based on a novel by Colombian Nobel Prize-winning writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez and will be directed by Venezuela-born director Alberto Arvelo.
The other is "Toussaint," which the statement said Glover plans to direct documenting the life of Haitian revolution leader Toussaint Louverture.
... Glover is among a number of high-profile U.S. supporters of Chavez. The group also includes singer Harry Belafonte and Princeton University scholar Cornel West, who have defended the Venezuelan president against accusations of democratic abuses.

“McCarthy” was right.
Of course Hollywood Reds have been proud of their activities in the past. In the 1960s they proudly carried their copies of Mao’s Little Red Book. Marlon Brando’s personal copy was sold on ebay in recent years.
Jane Fonda proclaimed that we’d all WANT to live under Communism if we only knew what it was.
Ya know. I’ve never been one to really boycott actors. I guess I expect high school dropouts who make a living pretending to be someone else to be shallow airheads and spew mindless senseless dialog in public - in a way, that’s their job, and I respect those who do it well and entertain me. I don’t take their rambling seriously, even though others may. Maybe I’m too tolerant of idiots, but I live in Dennis Kucinich’s district, so they’re all around me.
But directly helping a foreign dictator to make propaganda? That crosses a line as far as I’m concerned - the same one Jane Fonda crossed.
Danny... get out of America if you dislike it so much. Mr. Chavez needs a few more washed out actors in his communistic utopia.
Oh, yeah... and take Cindy with you.
This is what they advocate on everyone else.
“Leftist Weapon, Part 1”
BUMP
I am a big fan of the Stephen Hunter’s Bob Lee Swagger novels.
When the film “Shooter” was made from the book I wanted to see it rather badly.
But the choice of to see or not to see was taken from my hands.
Danny Glover in a staring role cinched it for me.
Clearly a no see.
I do not support traitors.
Golver, Redgrave, Fonda, Dixie Chicks, and on and on.
Eff’ em as John McCain would say.
Oh. He only reserves that for fellow Senators and political opponents?
Sean Penn is another traitor, who went to Iraq to speak against the US just before we invaded. Taking such actions go beyond the repugnancy of Rosie O’Donnell, Susan Sarandon, Tim Robbins, Alec Baldwin, et al. They, like Fonda’s trip to the Viet Cong, are aiding and abetting the enemy, traitorous.
