SO WE have been told to put up signs in churches telling people not to smoke.
From July 1 it's the law, apparently.
I have been going to church reasonably regularly for 46 years and I have never seen anyone light up in pew or aisle.
Twenty or 30 years ago it seemed that nearly everyone smoked. Prime Ministers puffed on pipes and politicians would light up while being interviewed on television. Deals were always done in smoke-filled rooms. But no one ever smoked in church.
So why do the health Nazis decree that we have to pollute the delicate heritage of our churches with garish signs telling us not to do something we would never do anyway? And why stop at smoking?
If the few church-going smokers left could fall prey to temptation without the day-glo sticker on the wall in front of their pew, where does this leave the murderers? If only the walls of Canterbury Cathedral had had a "no murdering" sticker on the wall in 1170 Thomas Becket would be still with us, in a manner of speaking.
The serious point is that the nanny state, coupled with the malign influence of political correctness,is making fools of us.
Far be it from me to advocate law-breaking but I do hope parochial church councils across west Berkshire will, at least, test this nonsense. If they do fall foul of some puffed-up inspector intent on implementing this lunacy, they should know that they will have the backing of their local MP.
In the same way it always amazes me that we never question the reading of the fire policy before meetings. I quietly grind my teeth when told week after week at meetings across the constituency that "in the event of fire" I should do, well, the bleeding obvious, frankly.
I know I am not a lone voice so perhaps now is the time for the fightback against the nanny state and political correctness to start.
Incense?
Our city requires a stupid graphic of a handgun wtih a red line through it on the door of every public building so I have to see it when I go to church and when I go into my office building. Makes me want to carry.
I would hope there is widespread disobedience that makes the Nazi’s look foolish.
Camellites?
I suppose next they will try to stop surgeons from smoking while the operate.
Reminds me of the old joke about the light in the loafers gent who decided to check out the local Catholic church one Sunday. He yells to the priest, “Love your outfit but your purse is on fire!”
And his wife Melissa, who now preaches on TV, is pretty "smoking" if you ask me...
Holy moly! Are you kidding me?
His wife? God, I thought it was his daughter.
I thought is silly when McD’s, etc, started having to put “Caution - Hot liquid” warnings on cups to alert coffee drinkers that the contents was hot, or when warnings were put on toasters advising us not to use them in the bathtub...
Now this.... Like everyone else, I have been going to church all my life and never once did I see anyone smoke - it’s not done.
And.. of course.... I must add.... what happened to the liberal mantra “separation of church and state”? You would think they wouldn’t be able to tell a church they must post the signs - ya think????
Gene Scott was born in 1929, Melissa Scott was born in 1968. 39 years older than her! She is only 39 now.
...they just might be a redneck.
Worth repeating.
It's called "the power of prayer"!
Gene Scott died a horrible, painful death. I hope he enjoyed his brief time with his wife.
Does this law apply to mosques?
Nope - www.pastormelissascott.com
She's on TV here usually around 11:30 pm or 12 am. I catch it sometimes when I'm flipping channels.
I'm not into listening to TV preachers at all, but she's OK to watch - I turn down the sound and watch her write on the whiteboard in Greek and Hebrew - yowza!
