Fred, you follow this issue carefully, does the size of the reaction to it negative reaction surprise you?
FRED BARNES, WEEKLY STANDARD: It did surprise me, actually. I didn't think conservatives, you know, from national review to people who just don't like immigrants would be as strong as it is. On the other hand, there's very broad base support for this measure in the Senate, and I think when some changes are made to, there'll be even more there will obviously have to be some made, there are complains about the worker program, there are complaints about that there weren't benchmarks...
HUME: You're talking about that so-called "Z visa" part of it.
BARNES: Well, there are complaints about the "Z visa."
HUME: "Z visa," by the way, would be available to people who are here illegally now and who could sort of, overnight, become legal.
BARNES: No, no. No, no. They can't over the then they will get a probationary period leading in about a year-and-a-half. HUME: But they'd be legal in that probationary period?
BARNES: They'd be legal during that period, but there would be they would have to step forward, they'd have a preliminary background check, I believe, they'd have and they would get a card which would allow them to continue working. And then the "Z visa" comes a year later, then they get a full background check, they have to pay a find, they have to do all kinds of things. It's not what I would call amnesty, but it is...

Brit,
Please invite more intelligent guests than the three stooges who appeared today: Barnes, Liason, Williams. Williams in particular shows that he has no understanding of the "Secure Borders, Economic Opportunity and Immigration Reform Act of 2007. He should read section 601(h), which nullifies the triggers for Z-Visa applicants.
>>conservatives, you know, from national review to people who just don’t like immigrants<<
Here we go again. Fred Barnes one step away from calling opponents of the bill racists. He has no clue how deep resentment runs against elitists like him and his buddies.
Barnes has never struck me as particularly bright. His REBEL IN CHIEF book was pretty embarrasing.
Does Fred really think we are buying this crap? I didn’t see the show but reading the transcript is truly pathetic...the jig is up Fred....What have you actually done in the last 20 years but run your pie hole, sell forgettable books and shine the Republican’s boots?
>>Barnes has never struck me as particularly bright<<
Mara Liasson, spouting White House/Kennedy talking points, did not come off any better.
“MARA LIASSON, NATIONAL PUBLIC RADIO: Well, that is what people point to when they say amnesty. Now the question is, is there anything short of deportation that would satisfy people who considered this particular set of obstacles, amnesty? And I don’t I think for many of them, there isn’t anything.
I do think one of the things that could be fixed which might bring in some more support is if it allowed for an easier process in the guest worker program, more illegal immigration, for more immigration for employers, because employers are key to this and they were part of the original coalition and a lot of them are nervous about what’s in here now.”
At least Barnes knows something about the Z-Visa process, but Williams has been accusing amnesty opponents of not reading the bill, while he is either totally ignorant of how it works or lying.
>>Does Fred really think we are buying this crap?<<
The direction of the discussion was that business interests needed to have more influence on the debate. The three stooges didn’t seem to care what opponents think. We are just uneducated yahoos, I guess.
more illegal immigration, for more immigration for employers
Let’s just quit beating around the bush on this issue(not directed at you Ding)...employers(whoever this groupd is made of) wants to keep wages down to maximize profits...am i reading this wrong? I don’t see it any other way.
Personally, kicking them out is what I'd like done, and would personally be willing to do it. I don't, however, think most Americans have the stomach for it, but would advise them to push for deportation. IMHO, one should should always push for more than you'd settle for.
Fred Barnes was living on some other planet last night... and Williams was in another dimension! FOX has always been pro-amnesty... but last night was insane.
BTW... where did you find the email address/contact info for Brit Hume?
I think they ought to get Thomas Sowell on the show! He has an article posted on the illegal immigration bill. As usual, it is excellent, clear, powerful reading. I don’t think Dr. Sowell does those type of shows, however.
I agree with you. If we we secure the boarders, and while that is being done, start to deport these law breakers at a higher rate, arrest employers who hire them etc. the U.S. will not be where they want to live.
Fred Barnes: I saw that show, it is getting as old as H & C, O’ Bill and the rest of Fox. Fox should move to , “We Report Conservative Views You Decide”
Its ILLEGALS, Barnes, you G*d D*mn, Son of a B*tch!!!!!!
I'm getting so fed up with these people in the MSM who try and blur the line between Legal Immigrants, and Illegals.
Barnes is an embarrassment.
Absolutely! Just how else would one get a compromise that's satisfactory to both sides?
Barnes, once again, demonstrates the lowest mental acuity of all “conservative” commentators. He’s been an embarrassment to the conservative movement for years, and the reasons for his continued appearances are baffling.
It’s interesting to me how the dialogue always centers on immigration and illegal immigration, as if there is absolutely no difference. That’s quite a trick.
or, to paraphrase Brit: “Fox News Clueless Beltway Shills All”.
Yep, and what will happen when the millions of Z-visa holders get under the UNION thumb.
Bye-bye low wages !
I’ve pretty much given up on fox news. They’re pretty worthless. Anyone so concerned about appearing “fair and balanced” can’t possibly be interested in the distribution of factual information.
The only pundit program I can stomach anymore is Glen Beck. It’s the only time my dial ever touches CNN.
