A Few of FR's Finest November 11, 2001

So many people have written me since my original Veteran's Day Tribute, asking how they, or a loved one, could be included in that tribute. Since I could no longer add the photos to the body of the thread, I have been including them here as I receive enough to make another collage.

I think there's never been a better nor more appropriate time to keep the faces of our own Veterans and Active Military in front of FReepers--every day! That's why I wanted to do yet another Daily Thread .....ABOUT FReepers .....and FOR FReepers. But not only about our Military FReepers; for all FReepers! Wouldn't it be nice to get to know a few of the other FReepers as well? That's why we've created a place for just that. This is a friendly room in JimRob's house where FReeper FRiends can gather every day and just say hello if that's all they want to do.

We have featured different FReepers, with a little background information on who they are and what makes them who they are, along with a few photos you might not have seen on other threads; sometimes others write an essay for us to post as the feature for the day; sometimes our presentation is a human interest story found elsewhere that you might not have read; sometimes special holiday threads; but whatever the topic of the day, it is always with FR's Finest in mind and that is YOU!

Every Monday we post the photos of FR's Military Personnel that I have collected and put into groups; these will be available to view through a link the remainder of the week - every day just a click away. :)   If you would like to add a photo of yourself or a loved one in the military, past or present, please let me know; I will hold it until I have enough for a new group.

Oceanside event honors military, their families

OCEANSIDE — Clad in his mask and cape, Batman attended a special event Saturday near the Oceanside Municipal Pier, but it was his father who was among the real heroes being honored.

Batman’s alter ego — 2-year-old Austin Morgan — joined his brother Nathan, 4, and their parents Laura Morgan, 22, and Marine Sgt. Daniel Morgan, 24, at the sixth annual Operation Appreciation, an event to thank the military and their families for their service to their country.

“I love it,” Daniel Morgan said, as his sons enjoyed one of the many free carnival-style rides. “It lets us know people out there actually do care about what we do.”

Launched by the Armed Services YMCA, the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce and the North County Times, Operation Appreciation included live music at the amphitheater near the pier and free food for military service members and their families. A children’s area offered free rides ranging from an inflatable slide shaped like a wave called “The Tsunami” to dragons on wheels riding in circles called “The Dragon Adventure.”

Tammi Harper, 37, of Carlsbad said she explained to her daughters, Mandy, 5, and Megan, 4, that Saturday’s festivities were “a thank you for Daddy being gone.” Harper’s husband, Lt. Cmdr. Mike Harper, 32, an 11-year Navy veteran, is aboard the USS Nimitz that deployed April 2.

“I think it’s important, especially in the Southern California area,” Tammi Harper said of Saturday’s event. “It’s nice to be appreciated.”

The first sight to grab the attention and interest of Lt. Col. Matt Hess’s two sons were military vehicles parked on the beach near the pier, Hess said.

“My kids are really enjoying climbing around the equipment,” Hess, 37, said.

On the amphitheater stage, flanked by dignitaries including some City Council members from Oceanside and Vista and Marine Corps officials, Mayor Jim Wood said he is proud of what “our neighbors to the north” on Camp Pendleton are doing.

“I can’t think of better people — good neighbors, good friends — than the people we honor every day for what they do for us,” Wood said of the Marines.

Brig. Gen. David Reist of the 1st Marine Logistics Group then told the audience that attending the event was a “special privilege.”

“We couldn’t do our jobs without the support we have from you — friends and family,” Reist said. “We thank you very much, and we look forward to today.”

Last year’s event attracted about 8,000 Marines, sailors and their families. Briana Wagner, event coordinator for the Oceanside Chamber of Commerce, said it was hard to tell how Saturday’s crowd compared with those of previous years because the event was spread over a wide area and people were waiting in long lines for food.

“It looks like there are a lot of military and their families, and that is what we focus on,” Wagner said.

We . . . are being transformed into [Christ’s] image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord. —2 Corinthians 3:18 Rick Warren’s The Purpose-Driven Life has had an unbelievable run on the best-seller lists. Its phenomenal appeal reminds us that believers and nonbelievers alike have a deep longing for a clear sense of purpose. We all want to know that our lives are involved in something worthwhile. Without a strong sense of calling and purpose, life is nothing more than routine busyness.

Being a follower of Jesus gives us a distinct advantage when it comes to having a sense of purpose. The Westminster Catechism sums it up well when it says the “chief end of man” is to “glorify God and to enjoy Him forever.”

Glorifying God means putting His character, His will, and His ways into action in all that we do. The apostle Paul reminded us that we “are being transformed into [Christ’s] image from glory to glory, just as by the Spirit of the Lord” (2 Cor. 3:18). The purpose of our lives is to let others see what God is like as they watch and experience His love through us.

What a profound privilege it is to mirror God’s love, mercy, grace, justice, and righteousness to a world whose heart is “veiled” to God’s truth! (4:3-4). Our purpose is to show others less of us and more of Him. That’s living on purpose with a purpose! 

So let our lips and lives express
The holy gospel we profess,
So let our words and virtues shine
To prove the doctrine all divine. —Watts
