Larry Flynt: My friend, Jerry Falwell
LA Times ^ | May 20, 2007 | Larry Flynt

Posted on 05/20/2007 2:54:16 AM PDT by Zakeet

THE FIRST TIME the Rev. Jerry Falwell put his hands on me, I was stunned. Not only had we been archenemies for 15 years, his beliefs and mine traveling in different solar systems, and not only had he sued me for $50 million (a case I lost repeatedly yet eventually won in the Supreme Court), but now he was hugging me in front of millions on the Larry King show.

It was 1997. My autobiography, "An Unseemly Man," had just been published, describing my life as a publisher of pornography. The film "The People vs. Larry Flynt" had recently come out, and the country was well aware of the battle that Falwell and I had fought: a battle that had changed the laws governing what the American public can see and hear in the media and that had dramatically strengthened our right to free speech.

[Snip]

Soon after that episode, I was in my office in Beverly Hills, and out of nowhere my secretary buzzes me, saying, "Jerry Falwell is here to see you." I was shocked, but I said, "Send him in." We talked for two hours, with the latest issues of Hustler neatly stacked on my desk in front of him.

[Snip]

I'll never admire him for his views or his opinions. To this day, I'm not sure if his television embrace was meant to mend fences, to show himself to the public as a generous and forgiving preacher or merely to make me uneasy, but the ultimate result was one I never expected and was just as shocking a turn to me as was winning that famous Supreme Court case: We became friends.

It could only be true with a Christian, like Jerry Falwell...

just a few more inches, and how many lives might not have been ruined by this pig's misuse of his gifts?

pushing pornography is like pushing leprosy, and making little girls the carriers.

I wish every father in the nation could meet Larry Flynt (and his ilk) in a dark alley every day of his life.

I don’t know how he did it. I don’t think I could have.

Reminds me of Abraham, pleading with God to spare Sodom... “What if you only find 50 righteous men in the city? What about forty?... Please don’t nuke em LORD...”

That’s real evangelism.

We became friends.

And people hate Giuliani because he's friends with McCain... ;)

Geez Larry, ever hear of loving the sinner, but hating the sin? I guess genuine love doesn't compute for Flynt.

Good article. Thanks for posting. Too bad Jerry couldn’t have become friends with Christopher Hitchens...

Jerry Falwell recognized a lost soul. Genuine pity is something Flint is apparently unable to comprehend & thats sad. Flint is a damaged soul. I was never a fan of Falwell, but I don’t doubt his heart. He had a passion for God. Interesting article.

What flint doesn't realize that Falwell did, is Jesus didn't just die for his friends, he died mostly for his enemies.

Falwell may have said some stupid things, but his actions were Christlike, and this shows it.

“Love thy enemies.” It confuses the heck out of them.

What a great thing it would be if through the death of Jerry Falwell, Larry Flynt would turn his life over to the Lord. Pray for him !

Say what you will about Flynt (and it’s probably all true,) but he didn’t have to speak publicly about any of this. In the face of the media’s general glee over Falwell’s death, Flynt’s statements are downright classy.
