Schwarzenegger Rejects LNG Terminal Off Southern California Coast (Cabrillo Port)

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger rejected an application Friday by an Australian energy company to build an $800 million floating liquefied natural gas terminal off the Southern California coast.

BHP Billiton's proposal previously was rejected by the State Lands Commission and the California Coastal Commission. The company needed permission from both bodies and the governor to build the terminal.

Schwarzenegger said he was open to the idea of building a terminal off the coast as a means of diversifying the state's fuel supply. But he said the current proposal did not pass muster.

"Liquefied natural gas can and must be an important addition to California's energy portfolio," the governor said in a statement. "However, any LNG import facility must meet the strict environmental standards California demands to continue to improve our air quality, protect our coast and preserve our marine environment. The Cabrillo Port LNG project, as designed, fails to meet that test."

The terminal was to be built about 14 miles off Malibu and 20 miles off Oxnard. Residents, including a number of celebrities, said it would be an eyesore and pollute the air.

The plan involved bringing chilled gas overseas to be heated and then piped ashore. From there, Southern California Gas Co. would deliver it to consumers.

BHP spokesman Patrick Cassidy said the company was disappointed with Schwarzenegger's decision.

"For now, we're considering the comments made about Cabrillo Port to determine what our next steps will be," he said.

No wind farms off Cape Cod, no LNG islands off Malibu

Something about those Kennedys..

Why would we want cheaper natural gas?

Australia should now build it off Tijuana Mexico and charge California 25% extra to ship it across the Mexican border. Or maybe Arnold can get Mexican Coyotes to smuggle it across the border for a few pesos.

What a dumb $&!+.

Do your homework, forget about diesel, CNG/LPG is the fuel for autos in the near future, in my opinion.

Some college teams I think have taken a Prius and converted it to CNG with a plug in for an ultra clean high mileage macine.

India will soon have Autorickshaws that will be Direct Injected 2 strokes, and then Direct Injection burning CNG/LPG

There is a huge LNG port being built in Baja now to feed SCal. They are building the pipeline north as we post.
That can be expanded further. Course the Mexicans will get a cut to pipe us the gas. At least Barbara Steisand and other libs won’t have to look at it..as they roar off to Hollywood in their 500 hp Porsche SUV.
We are doing our best to create a better economy in Mexico..to keep them at home.

No, build it off Puerto Penasco at the head of the Gulf: nice quiet waters, and an easy route into the US through Arizona.

No escape route for the huge LNG tankers should a hurricane come up from the south. Maybe put it on the Gulf of Mexico side and run the pipe through Texas along the pan-american corridor.

Because we all know they just pipe it in and burn it at the terminal. Plus, there’s that 16 mile wide fireball* if it exploded. Being only 14 miles away, it would engulf Malibu.

*actual moonbat argument

To late to tell it's benefits.

I'm from California. I want an infinite source of cheap energy. Just, don't drill off the coast, build nukes, pump in LNG or build wind farms. And hydrogen is too scary, I saw The Hindenberg

said it would be an eyesore

WOW!!! Are these folks uninformed or just intentionally misleading everyone?

Under typical marine layer conditions, which prevail 325 to 340 days a year, the FSRU is not perceptible to the naked eye. Under clear conditions, which prevail 25 to 40 days a year, Cabrillo Port will be barely visible from Point Mugu (its closest point to shore at approximately 14 miles). Independent modeling experts have advised the state of California that under clear conditions the FSRU will have the visual impact of a "grain of rice" held between the thumb and forefinger with your arm fully extended from your body.

The picture above is not just where the plant would go, but what is would look like on most days you could even see it.

Well, if my memory serves me right, the horizon is the square root of the height in feet above sea level times 1.7,
so you’re not going to see much at all that far out...
