Commander's veto sank Gulf buildup (Admiral Fallon opposes military move against Iran?)
Inter Press Service, Asia Times ^ | 17MAY07 | Gareth Porter

Posted on 05/17/2007 3:18:13 AM PDT by familyop

Fallon's refusal to support a further naval buildup in the Gulf reflected his firm opposition to an attack on Iran and an apparent readiness to put his career on the line to prevent it. A source who met privately with Fallon around the time of his confirmation hearing and who insists on anonymity quoted Fallon as saying that an attack on Iran "will not happen on my watch". Asked how he could be sure, the source said, Fallon replied, "You know what choices I have. I'm a professional." Fallon said he was not alone, according to the source, adding, "There are several of us trying to put the crazies back in the box."

Is the story for real? It is being distributed in the USA mostly by anti-defense publications (thus, the excerpt-only piece), but we've also recently been seeing some reluctant behavior on defense from our Government.

Ah. Here’s where it came from: Inter Press Service (subscription), Italy - May 15, 2007. Italy recently became Iran’s main trading partner.

This is complete and utter Bovine Scatology.

Adm Fallon was PACOM (Pacific Command) before he was CENTCOM, and I know some folks who worked for him and told me what he was like. He would never, ever refer to his superiors as "crazies."

It is easy to plant stories about Generals and Admirals.

You can put any words in their mouth you want, and reporters are pretty sure they won't even respond. IF they respond and deny this garbage, reporters will whisper "They are just trying to protect their bosses" meaning the SECDEF and the President.

Thank you. Here's some information from a small US paper.

Admiral Fallon honored by USO
Merchantville NJ Online
Tuesday, 19 September 2006
A Navy admiral and an Air Force sergeant from South Jersey were honored Friday night by the USO, a services support organization. Adm. William J. Fallon, former Merchantville resident and head of the U.S. Pacific Command, received the Liberty Award, the highest honor bestowed by the USO of Pennsylvania and Southern New Jersey. Fallon, a graduate of Camden Catholic High School and Villanova University

has distinguished himself by going "above and beyond" in the mentoring of young sailors, said D.J. Stanhope, the USO chapter's executive director. He also cited the naval aviator's achievements as Navy commander in the Pacific.

A quick search on the author (Gareth Porter) reveals that he’s probably anti-defense. ...still can’t see Porter’s propaganda angle in misrepresenting Fallon as being like himself, though.

It would be good to know what the ACTUAL plan is for Iran. Not sure whether this is true about Adm Fallon...but our tone has changed toward Iran, and it looks like the State Dept is running things now.

He could be immediately courtmartialed for insubordination, if true.

Those of us who have served with Fox Fallon recognize this article for the steaming pile that it is.

Sun Tzu, Machiavelli, and Clausewitz could have learned much from Fox.

Bush Names Lute to New Post to Support Iraq, Afghanistan Ops
American Forces Press Service ^ | Donna Miles

Posted on 05/16/2007 5:32:22 PM PDT by SandRat

WASHINGTON, May 16, 2007 – President Bush announced yesterday that he has named Army Lt. Gen. Douglas E. Lute, director of operations for the Joint Staff, as assistant to the president and deputy national security advisor for Iraq and Afghanistan.

Bush named Lute to the new position to serve as the full-time manager for implementing and executing U.S. strategies for Iraq and Afghanistan, the president explained. Lute also will manage the interagency policy-development process for the two theaters, working closely with National Security Advisor Stephen J. Hadley, the Cabinet and the president.

Lute’s efforts will directly support Navy Adm. William J. Fallon, commander of U.S. Central Command; Army Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of Multinational Force Iraq; U.S. commanders in Afghanistan; and the U.S. ambassadors to Iraq and Afghanistan, Bush said.

“Nothing is more important than getting Admiral Fallon, General Petraeus, American commanders in Afghanistan, and Ambassadors (Ryan) Crocker and (William) Wood what they need, and Douglas Lute can make sure that happens quickly and reliably,” the president said.

Bush praised Lute as “a tremendously accomplished military leader who understands war and government and knows how to get things done.”

Gareth Porter has a well-documented history of embellishment, half-truths, and blame-America-first-ism.

That being said, Fallon is a professional soldier... and as such probably has little use for taking assets away from where they are needed and putting men into harm’s way simply to send a political message.

Political considerations are one of the reasons we have not taken a flamethrower to Iraq while carpet-bombing the Iranian border.

Thank you all very much. The front-page information that some of you posted regarding Gareth Porter will be found through the search engines, thanks in part to the need to excerpt Asia Times material. :-) After another quick search, I found that Gareth Porter wrote much in favor of Hanoi during the Vietnam War.

I’ve noticed the efforts by anti-defense writers to falsely report or over-emphasize differences of opinions in the Bush Administration. ...best that I can tell, such writers accomplish little in the USA for their anti-USA cause beyond prompting us to write to our politicians for more aggressive defense. Their false reports, then, appear to be aimed at making our nation look weaker in the eyes of enemies.

Yea, but of the course the only way to put the crazies back in the box may be to attack Iran. That's were they have really high per capita crazy index.

Or we could send Pelosi, Reed, Kennedy, and others of that ilk, to GitMo, to join their fellow America haters.
