Clinton's man in California a pro at digging up dirt

Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton has turned to Averell "Ace" Smith -- who earned his stripes as one of the nation's most feared political opposition researchers -- to steer her campaign in California.

Smith, 48, is genteel, soft-spoken and bespectacled -- but also is the epitome of a take-no-prisoners political operative who has built a reputation as a dogged researcher and, more recently, a winning California campaign manager, political allies and opponents agree.

"I've seen him walk into a room, and the opposition candidate will literally start mumbling," said former Democratic strategist Clint Reilly, who has run campaigns for U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein and former Democratic state Treasurer Kathleen Brown and has worked with Smith. "They're just totally terrified with his presence."

Smith, 48, surprised California political veterans by jumping from the role of top political researcher to the role of campaign manager during Antonio Villaraigosa's successful 2005 run for mayor of Los Angeles against then-incumbent James Hahn.

Villaraigosa credits Smith with making the "biggest difference" in the campaign's message in what became a landslide victory.

"He's single-minded in his focus, intensely disciplined and loyal," Villaraigosa said of Smith, who remains a trusted adviser. "He loves politics and thrives in the heat of battle ... (and) has an incredible intensity level. He comes to play the game, and he works from the first minute to the last."

Well, of course. That’s the way the Clintonistas play.

I wonder if there is a “wall” within the Secret Service concerning competing candidates?

Or could they be used for intel gathering?

The Clintons had to hire a new dirt-digger, since their previous one, Anthony Pellicano, is in jail.

Maybe someone should dig up the dirt on this guy. It seems he is neck deep in it himself.

She can hire all the sharks she wants, she still can’t overcome her negatives that start from within. Did you ever see Madonna’s movies. The camera does not lie. Hillary will go down like a stone.

Who is she going to contract to kill people's dogs and dump them on their front porches?

Whatever happened to Terry Lenzner? I thought he was in charge of the Clinton dirt machine? Maybe he's too old.

I agree. She is extremely polarizing. Unfortunately that’s not gonna stop her. The only difference between her and Beelzebub is no ones ever proven she has no b@lls.

n a recent appearance on NBC’s Meet the Press, former independent counsel Joseph DiGenova charged the Clinton administration with hiring private investigators Jack Palladino and Terry Lenzner to dig for dirt on him and his attorney wife. The allegation drew a sharp response from White House Press Secretary Mike McCurry, “We don’t retain private investigators to go snoop around about prosecutors, reporters or Joe DiGenova.”

But change is the object of spin. The next day, McCurry felt compelled to amend his previous statement. He confirmed that Lenzner was hired by the law firm of Williams & Connolly, which represents Bill Clinton in the Paula Corbin Jones sexual-harassment case. “There is a whole big difference between doing legwork on behalf of attorneys ... vs. digging up dirt on people’s private lives,” declared the vacillating McCurry.

The pattern of “rolling disclosure” evidenced in this case is reminiscent of nearly every scandal involving the Clinton administration. Democratic campaign consultant James Carville may have explained the strategy back in 1984 when he said, “The whole tide of history has shown us that if you lie loud enough and long enough that, no matter how ludicrous the lie is, people will believe it.”...

While the Clinton administration now is feigning outrage at the allegations made by DiGenova concerning the hiring of investigators Lenzner and Palladino to try to get something on him and his wife, it is well-known that earlier the Clinton camp hired Palladino to control what former Clinton gubernatorial chief of staff Betsey Wright called “bimbo eruptions.” In April 1992, payments of $28,000 to Palladino by the firm of Denver lawyer and Clinton supporter Jim Lyons were included on the Federal Election Commission reports filed by Clinton. Palladino later was hired directly by the Clinton campaign and earned more than $100,000 for his services.

I agree. She is extremely polarizing.

It's more than just being polarizing, she's a horrible speaker, has no political instinct, and she's way too dogmatic. Other than that she's perfect.
