Rudy Giuliani Continues Slide in Polls As Abortion Criticism Increases

Washington, DC (LifeNews.com) -- Rudy Giuliani is continuing to slide in the polls as he is plagued by more criticism over his position on abortion. The former New York City mayor has drawn strong opposition because of his pro-abortion views, but recent flaps about supporting taxpayer funding for abortions and donations to Planned Parenthood haven't helped.

A new CNN poll shows Giuliani has dropped a large nine percentage points from March to May -- going from 34 percent nationally to just 23 percent.

Virtually every other candidate has gained or stayed the same in the poll and benefited from the ex-mayor's slide.

John McCain, who has been emphasizing his opposition to abortion recently and said Giuliani would have problems attracting GOP voters over abortion, rose from 18 to 23 percent from March to May.

Fred Thompson, the pro-life former Tennessee senator who is not officially in the race, rose to 13 percent from 11 percent in CNN's April poll.

Mitt Romney increased a point to 10 percent, New Gingrich, who is not running, rose from 8 to 9 percent, and Mike Huckabee, the pro-life former Arkansas governor, moved to 3 percent from 1 percent.

Sam Brownback and Tom Tancredo also rose 1 point to 2 percent each while other candidates just registered the support of one percent in the survey.

CNN conducted telephone interviews with 414 registered Republicans from May 4 to May 6 and the margin of error is 5 percent.

It will take a while, but I’m in good hopes that we can cut Rudy off before the primaries. The more people understand what he is saying, the more they will turn away from him.

Fred Thompson is now hinting that he may not enter the race until next fall. I think that makes sense. If he comes in now, it would be right at the start of the summer doldrums. Better to wait for the new season. It remains to be seen whether Duncan Hunter can move into the next bracket before then. I do NOT think that either McCain or Romney is a viable candidate.

Most of the candidates started too early, for various reasons. It was clinton who set the precedent in the 1996 elections, fund raising more than a year before anyone else woke up. This time it was hillary, who felt she had to declare to cut out some of her competitors. It just means that people will have more time to get sick of her.

This needs to go even lower.

Rudy has taken many positions in his career anathema to the core of the modern Republican Party. His pro abortion stance is just the first to get a review. Most people at this point in the race know zip about positions of any candidate, Republican or Democrat. Hence, any poll is but a contest in name recognition.

When Rudy's positions on many issues near and dear to Republicans get the play they should, Rudy will be moved to the "fringe candidate" area of the spectrum.

RG created his own slippery slope on the abortion issue and deserves to be booted from the primary field pronto. His own statements shows he has no respect for human life whatever.

His ratings will go lower and the msm will decry it as a failure of the GOPs base, not his RINO positions.

TEll me who you like. I like Rudy. Also, Fred T. and D. Hunter. Until Thompson runs, Rudy is the best to beat Hildebeast. McBain fails as an economic conservative. Romney, is too much of a wiz.

I WILL NOT vote for Rooty. He IS NOT a conservative and he CANNOT beat Hillary.

The only acceptable candidates are Duncan Hunter and Fred Thompson.

It continues to amaze me that so many good folks really believe that abortion is the only real issue facing America and the world. Have any of those folks been paying attention to the news? What does it really matter whether the president is pro-life or pro-choice? Abortion is an issue for the courts and for the states — for the people of the states to decide. Most legal scholars agree that the Roe v. Wade decision was a faulty decision and could well be overturned. But that would only send the matter back to the states, where some form of abortion law would be enacted. As much as we might like to reverse the abortion mentality, it doesn’t seem likely to happen. To make the abortion issue the litmus test for a president is not only misplaced, but extremely short-sighted, as well.

It was only a matter of time before the voters tired of the three-card monty routine known as the Giulianni campaign. Good for them.
