HOUSTON -- Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani on Friday urged conservatives to look past his support for abortion rights, arguing that his divergence on the issue should not disqualify him from being the party's GOP nominee.

***snip***

Describing his belief that abortion was "morally wrong," Giuliani said he has opposed it all his life. But he said he believes the decision should ultimately be left to individuals and that their decisions should be respected.

"In a country like ours ... I believe you have to respect their viewpoint and give them a level of choice. I would grant women the right to make that choice," he said.

I respect Rudy more for finally being honest about his position on this issue. He lost the possibility of getting my vote on the day I realized he’s pro-abortion, but at least now he’s quit trying to con us.

This guy seems to have a political death-wish. And to think a few months ago I took a serious look at him.

And by the way Rudy, we don’t grant rights.

I agree completely with both your posts.

But now we can all truly be wide awake about Rudy’s pro-abortion heart.

Gee Rudy baby. You say I should look past your stance on abortion.

I guess that means I am supposed to look past your record and stance on homosexuality and gun control too -—Huh??

Sorry Rudy, but you are sucking wind pal.

Translation: "If killing kids is your bag, baby, knock yourself out!"

I wasn't voting for Giuliani before this, but this groveling pledge of allegiance to Planned Parenthood inspires me to spend money to help defeat him in the primaries.

Was Giuliani pro-choice in allowing NY city law abiding residents to own their firearms. Or is he like most liberals only pro choice on the option of killing babies.

Even if Giuliani was a passionate advocate of the 2nd Amendment instead of a passionate opponent, he still wouldn't have been able to change NYC firearms laws.

At no point in his mayoralty did he have the backing of more than 30% of the City Council.

I will look past your views on abortion Rudy, and I will also look past you for a nominee.

I note that in another forum in a discussion of this speech, one Rudiphile wished that there would be no more discussion of this topic by saying—no kidding—”I am sick to death of it.”

Sometimes irony can be so ironic.

Excellent point, Graymatter! Rights exist in nature, and cannot be granted by man. What Rudy is really talking about is permission. But "permission" carries no moral weight, hence the common misuse of the word "right" when someone's trying to imbue a permission with the moral authority it inherently lacks.

Even if Giuliani was a passionate advocate of the 2nd Amendment instead of a passionate opponent, he still wouldn't have been able to change NYC firearms laws.

Rudy, however, tightened the screws on permit holders and forced thousands of them to give up their weapons. And also called for more federal gun control laws. Spoke at VPC rallies. And sued gun manufacturers.

So that's moot.

Even if the very best thing he could do was to NOT make things worse, he failed.
