CARSON CITY, Nev., May 8 (UPI) -- The Nevada Senate has scored a first: the reading of a Sanskrit blessing by a Hindu chaplain to open its session.
Rajan Zed, director of interfaith relations at the Hindu Temple of Northern Nevada and a resident of Reno, wore saffron-colored clothing and traditional sandalpaste marks on his forehead as he prayed before Nevada's senators Monday.
Translated into English, one of the ancient Hindu prayers read by Zed said:
"May we be protected together. May we be nourished together. May we work together with great vigor. May our study be enlightening. May no obstacle arise between us."
Members of Nevada's Hindu community and clergy members from several Christian denominations attended, a press release from the Legislature said.
Hindu are not trying to kill us or destroy our way of life. I see no problem.
Which of the 10,000 gods did they pick?
I just do not have all that much dispute with Hindus and prayers in Sanskrit. At least with the Hindus, the principle of reciprocity is recognized.
I would have a little uneasiness about Islamic prayers recited over a loudspeaker in Arabic, while all participants were bent over forward, kneeling on mats, with their heads directed toward Mecca. Very little room for deviation there.
Ecumenical outreach can only extend so far.
At least the Hindus aren’t trying to kill us and take over our government.
All those buried in the graveyard at Virginia City just rolled over....
Better a Sanskrit prayer than the goat-bleating coming from an imam.
Sort of a "To whom it may concern" prayer, but the sentiments are appropriate.
