China Tells Little About Illness That Kills Pigs, Officials Say

By KEITH BRADSHER

HONG KONG, May 7 — A mysterious epidemic is killing pigs in southeastern China, but international and Hong Kong authorities said Monday that the Chinese government was providing little information about it or the contaminated wheat gluten that has caused death and illness in pets in the United States.

The lack of even basic details is reviving longstanding questions about whether China is willing to share information about health and food safety issues with potentially global implications.

The Chinese government — and particularly the government of Guangdong Province, which is next to Hong Kong — was criticized in 2003 for concealing information about the SARS virus when it emerged in Foshan, 95 miles northwest of Hong Kong. After SARS, or severe acute respiratory syndrome, spread to Hong Kong and around the world, top Chinese officials promised to improve disclosure.

But officials in Hong Kong, at the World Health Organization and at the Food and Agriculture Organization said Monday that they had been told almost nothing about the latest pig deaths and that they had been given limited details about the apparently unrelated problem of wheat gluten contamination.

This little piggy ate "TD glycerine" (actually diethylene glycol) that was supposed shipped to Panama and used in cough medicine.

This little piggy ate "wheat gluten" (actually loaded with melamine to show a falsely high protein content).

They can just blame it on global warming and the media will be satisfied that they have the answer.

It used to be that American food was fairly well labeled: that by “Made In...” one could be reasonably sure that was the case. Now however with “Distributed By...” or “Packaged In The United States” we really have no idea where the product is actually from. Thus a real threat to American consumers at a time deemed right by an enemy - any enemy - in a war in which terror sees victory and “Death To America” as its birthright.

Since Global WarmingTM Climate Change, all roads lead right back to Global WarmingTM Climate Change.

...been audited by the IRS?

...NOT been audited by the IRS?

Dude, you gotta get up to speed. The cool cats, who really know have 'moved on' from calling it 'global warming'. That's So-ooo yesterday!

The importance of the pig in the Chinese food chain cannot be overstated. Its no wonder they are keeping this information on the down low.

Does that mean that pigs have flown?

The author mentions "the disease reportedly started killing pigs after Chinese New Year celebrations in February," but doesn't mention that the celebrations began the Chinese Year of the Pig. A curious omission.

Well, you are correct with the “Year of the Pig” thing, but I don’t see anything sinister about the reporter not mentioning it. Just lousy research and background checking on his part.

But a good catch on our part.

I was looking in the vitamin department in Wally World yesterday. There was a vendor type guy there straightening the shelves who asked if he could help me. I gave him a bottle of Melatonin and asked where is this made? He looked on the bottle and told me Chatsworth Ca. is what it says on the label but I don’t know if everything is made there.

I said right, and asked him if he knew all vitamin C is coming from China and he said yes and so are a lot of prescription drugs. He then added that the FDA would make sure that those are in their proper/safe form. I said are you kidding me? The FDA hardly checks anything, maybe the RX drugs but not vitamins and other things. Then I threw in the dog food melamine thing, and he said yeah it’s a problem alright.

If it's really a pig-killing virus, that could be a Bad Thing. The reason why flu strains tend to come out of China is because there's a mutation cycle there, involving humans, ducks, and pigs ... all of which live in close proximity, and contribute to virus mutations that move into human populations.

If this pig virus moves out into the human population, it could be nasty.
