Sweden welcomes release of detained Swedes from Iran
Stockholm (dpa) - Two Swedish men sentenced last year for espionage in Iran arrived in Sweden on Tuesday, the day after Iranian authorities pardoned them. Construction workers Jari Hjortmar, 34, and Stefan Johansson, 38, expressed "relief" and "joy" to be reunited with their families after being held for 14 months in Iran. Both men said they were well-treated while in prison but told reporters they were "shocked" over their arrest after photographing what Iranian authorities described as military installations on the Qeshm island near the Gulf port of Bandar Abbas in southern Iran.
Foreign Minister Carl Bildt said it was "very heartening" that the two were released. "Joint efforts, also with (opposition Social Democratic parliamentarian) Urban Ahlin, have been successful," Bildt said. Both men live in Ahlin's constituency and the politician has visited Iran on several occasions to seek their release. He flew with them from Iran to Sweden. In May a revolutionary court in Bandar Abbas, which usually deals with offences violating national security, sentenced the two men who to three years imprisonment.
