ACLU comes to Laredo ; Only second border chapter [MCLU?]
LAREDO MORNING TIMES ^ | 05/06/2007 | JULIAN AGUILAR

Posted on 05/06/2007 12:51:53 PM PDT by SwinneySwitch

The American Civil Liberties Union is beginning a chapter in Laredo. Martí Garza, associate director of the ACLU of Texas, said the organization will hold its first meeting Wednesday at the Pelican’s Wharf restaurant, 619 Chicago St., at 6:30 p.m.

Garza said the Laredo chapter will be the only one in Texas south of San Antonio and the second in a border city in the state. The ACLU also has a chapter in El Paso.

Garza said he has heard a lot of positive feedback from the south Texas community about bringing the organization to Laredo.

“We are very excited,” he said from his Austin office Wednesday. “We are going to diversify who we are as an organization. There are good folks in Laredo that are interested in us ramping up our presence.”

Garza said that Laredo is a prime spot for a new chapter because of its proximity to Mexico and the issues that are specific to border communities, including homeland security and immigrants’ rights.

Local attorney David Almaraz, a member of the ACLU since 1992, said Laredo is in need of an ACLU chapter because of the massive presence of law enforcement agencies in the city.

“Because we are on the border, we are susceptible to over-zealous law enforcement,” he said. “I believe bringing a local chapter will do a lot to inform the general public about their liberties.”

Almaraz said the ACLU is often depicted as a liberal organization, but stressed that its members include liberals and conservatives, as well as Democrats, Republicans and independents.

“All the ACLU says is as long as we are a free society, we have to uphold the Bill of Rights,” he said.

The American Civil Liberties Union says that Laredo is prime spot for a new chapter because of its proximity to Mexico?

That doesn't make any sense!

Wrong, there are no conservatives in the ACLU. Obviously they are mistaking RINOs for conservatives. It’s a common mistake.

They keep saying ‘immigrants’ as if they have any rights being in this country illegally.

Laredo! I spent six months and a few days there in 1959 during the second part of USAF flight school. What a, let’s say, unusual city. Even ‘way back then English was the foreign language. After a few sojourns across the border to see what there was to see, I elected to not stray from the base and concentrate on completing the program, pinning on a set of wings and beating a path to SAC training as far from the border as possible (Wichita, Kansas). One can only imagine what it’s like today with our border as open as a running garden hose.

You’re right, the Anti-American Communist Lawyer’s Union is “comprised” of progressives and other socailists.

“because of its proximity to Mexico?”

I’m assuming this is so that they can “monitor” the border agents and/or minutemen.

traitors.

From an Email I received today.

Everyone concentrates on the problems we’re having in this country lately. Illegal immigration, hurricane recovery, wild animals attacking humans in Florida. Not me. I concentrate on solutions to problems. The result is a win-win-win situation:

+ Dig a moat the length of the Mexican border.

+ Use the dirt to raise the levies in New Orleans.

+ Put the Florida alligators in the moat.
Any other problems you would like for me to solve today?

The ACLU goes where they think there’s an abundance of *victims*. What better place than the US/Mexico border.
