More Tornadoes Hit Southwest Kansas

GREENSBURG, Kan. — A fresh wave of tornadoes ripped through southwest Kansas on Saturday evening, a day after a tornado destroyed this town, killing nine and injuring dozens more.

The National Weather Service said it had received reports "well into the double digits" of twisters touching down in six counties.

Among them were a series of half-mile wide "wedge" tornadoes — similar to the one that devastated Greensburg on Friday night, meteorologist Mike Umscheid said.

"We're going to expect quite a lot of damage," he said.

The twisters were reported just after emergency crews called off the search for more victims of Friday night's tornado.

Rescuers had spent the day hurrying through the wreckage from that giant tornado, which left little standing beyond the local pub.

City Administrator Steve Hewitt estimated 95 percent of the town of 1,500 was destroyed and predicted rescue efforts could take days as survivors could be trapped in basements and under rubble.

The MSM is prepping to pounce on the White House at the hint of a FEMA fumble, a-la Katrina, if not blame Bush outright for the tornadoes because of Global Warming...

When I left Kansas for CA, everybody told me I was crazy to move to the land of earthquakes.

Yes, it becomes clear every Spring why the vast difference in real estate prices exists. ;)

It’s really nobody’s fault and this is not about politics. It’s just the middle of Spring, that’s tornado season in those parts and this is what happens sometimes. It’s happened before (long before Global Warming Hysteria) and it will happen again and again.

But with that being said, I saw the pictures of the devastation and I just wanted to cry. I tried to imagine what it would be like if I woke up one morning and nearly every home and business in my town was scrubbed clean by a massive wind and all that was left was bare foundations and rubble. How would I feel if every familiar land mark was suddenly gone; my home, my neibors homes, the schools, the churches, the shopping centers, my doctor’s office, the play grounds, the post office, the library, the trees, all gone? I can’t imagine nearly a whole town just disappeared in the blink of an eye.

Just when we like to think we are in control of everything, “Mother Nature” puts things in perspective for us.

And you are still alive, buried in that rubble, waiting for rescue and the twisters come again the next night. Unthinkable.

I tried to put myself in their shoes and picture it as well. It would be devestating to have to go through. That’s an understatement.

When I lived in Los Angeles, I was in the 1994 earthquake and it was the most frightening thing ever. Now, being back in Kansas, I hate tornadoes but at least we have some watches and warnings when the weather turns wacky and I’ve got a basement. I think the greatest fear I had when living in LA was that at any moment there could be an earthquake and that made me nervous some nights.

I know there are more tornado outbreaks tonight in the in the mid west and in that general area, but are you saying that more tornadoes are hitting Greensburg again? That really is unthinkable and unimaginable. I really can’t imagine enduring something so horrendous except perhaps a nuclear war.

More than a dozen in the same vicinity, with several being “wedge” tornadoes, half a mile or more wide.

I live 100+ miles north of LA. I won’t live in an area that populous. Any kind of disaster could trigger social disorder, which I fear more than the earthquake. I also don’t want to be near the tall buildings during a shaker.

But be that as it may, I remember the tornado damage evey year somewhere in KS. We used to get in the family car and drive over to where the mayhem took place.

I lived in Wifield and Newton.

Yup, we don’t much like earthquakes sneaking up on us either. You were not alone.
