Gore's ban on media is hurting the vital cause he wants to help

Express-News

The question has come up on talk radio. It has come via e-mail. And it has come served up a la voice mail.

"Why doesn't former Vice President Al Gore want the media to hear his keynote address to a major gathering of architects in San Antonio on Saturday?"

Unfortunately, until one of Gore's people responds to phone or e-mail messages, I simply don't know.

What I do know is, like it or not, Gore is damaging the cause of environmentalism — the calling to which he has devoted his post-political life — more than he's helping it.

As people are known to do when a former presidential candidate (of all people!) doesn't want to face the media, they fill in the blanks for themselves.

And it spreads faster than a Swift Boat campaign.

"I'll tell you why he doesn't want the media there," a local AM radio talk show host said. "He's either shading the truth about global warming or he's outright lying about it."

A caller kind enough to lay down a voice mail said: "Gore, by restricting media coverage, is enabled to say one thing to one organization and something different to another, and never the twain shall meet."

The following e-mailer probably best summed up the response from the skeptical public: "His policy raises eyebrows. If he is telling the truth, why doesn't he want people to hear it? Maybe he isn't telling the truth."

I can't imagine that the multiplatform media assault will subside before the start of the American Institute of Architects annual convention Thursday.

And that's too bad for the architects. With about 20,000 people registered for the three-day event, AIA officials are looking to bring greater visibility and acceptance to "green" building and environmentally sensitive design practices.

Gore's decision to lock out the media, however, has robbed the AIA of a monumental public relations opportunity.

Fresh off writing the best-selling book "An Inconvenient Truth" and starring in the Oscar-winning documentary of the same name, Gore was going to be AIA's version of a Super Bowl halftime show.

Now, it's as if the National Football League booked a Beatles reunion show for the big game, only to have the band tell them they don't want it to be televised after all.

Alas, Gore has proven to be dismissive of this type of kvetching in the past.

Last year when a Gore appearance in Washington state was made off-limits to the media, Seattle Post-Intelligencer columnist Joel Connelly characterized the former vice president as "almost slinking into Seattle."

The newspaper's editorial board followed it up by playing to Gore's senses:

"For the sake of the cause, not his or (Seattle Mayor Greg) Nickels' political standing, Gore should play his visit to the hilt. Global warming matters to everyone, increasingly in ways that transcend political divisions."

In recent years, Gore has done a remarkable job of rehabilitating his image from the despair of being cast as the luckless figure who won the popular vote but still lost the 2000 presidential election.

Once criticized as too passive, too bland and too stiff, Gore is now collecting Hollywood hardware.

But as long as he plays coy with the media, he's allowing others to speculate about his global warming agenda.

And being called a liar hurts not only him, but arguably the most important issue of this century.

“cast as the luckless figure who won the popular vote but still lost the 2000 presidential election”

That’s something that really hacks me off. If demonrat voter fraud were subtracted, I don’t think he would have come anywhere near winning the poopular vote.

It is like Hillary lecturing to GAY organizations and banning media coverage.
Gore cannot withstand real scrutiny of his talks.

He’s a fraud and needs to be able to bamboozle the next town and convention.

Ha!

Glow-bull warming is not politics?

Bet me.

Of course, I wouldn't expect anything else from the Excuse for News.

It's inconvenient.

I think he isn't telling the entire truth. This gore-bull warming is cherry picking a few facts and profiting from the DBM's agreement with his lies.

Hey, it’s OK to fudge facts when your cause is noble, ie, global socialism.

The "Swift Boat" phrase has certainly taken hold in the media. I see it all the time.

Most effective $ contribution I've ever made.

>>>"Why doesn't former Vice President Al Gore want the media to hear his keynote address....<<<

Because there is a chance, admittedly slim, that one or two of the press corps might be something other than GreenNutCases.

If anyone with a shred of credibility on Global Warming hears his theories, he will be proved a total fraud!

Someone please explain to me how you can “lock out” the media. If someone in the media really cared, they could buy a membership in AIA and pay to attend the conference. The “media” is in bed with Gore.

"What I do know is, like it or not, Gore is damaging the cause of environmentalism..."

No kidding!

Let's see, in Gore's movie he say that during the 21st century sea levels will rise 20 feet. Yet, the IPCC report (Gore's alleged bible) says worst case is a 23 inch sea level rise and best case only a 7 inch sea level rise in the 21st century.

Amazing how liberals ignore these glaring lies of Gore's!

Gore is scared of this one question by the media in front of architects who build "green" homes.

"Why do you live in a large inefficient electricity hog and President Bush lives in a small Earth-friendly ranch eco-home?"

That one question will KILL Gore on the spot in front of the eco-architects!
