NEW YORK Mayor Rudolph Giuliani, who is barred by term limits from running for re-election this fall, is trying to extend his term, a source close to the mayor told The Associated Press on Monday. Giuliani, widely praised for his handling of the city since the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, was planning to make an announcement Monday about his efforts to stay in office, said the source, speaking on condition of anonymity.

Giuliani is scheduled to leave office Dec. 31 because of term-limit laws. It was unclear whether the Republican mayor would try to have those laws amended so voters could elect him for a third term or whether he would try to extend his current term.

~snip~

For Giuliani to be eligible to continue serving beyond a second term, the Legislature and Republican Gov. George Pataki would have to enact emergency legislation to extend his term, or the City Council and city voters would have to amend the City Charter.

To all of the Rudy Rooters out there:

This is what Rudy thinks of the law, he attempted to use the same tactic used by nearly every dictator in history.

The Rudyites are very fond of saying that Rudy believes in the law; however, he attempted to seize power by using a tragedy as an excuse — the same method employed by dictators throughout history.

I remember this story. It fell apart a few days later. They may have looked into it very, very briefly, but rejected it quickly as politically impossible and practically unwise, with all the other opportunities out there for him at the time.

I’m no Rudy fan anymore, but digging up old junk like this? Geez...

I'm no fan of Giuliani... but a source close to the mayor told The Associated Press on Monday is hardly something I'd consider to be reliable.

Google Giuliani trying to extend term as mayor and see what you come up with. This is yet another verifiable FACT that Rudy has no explanation for.

The fact that Rudy realized he couldn’t get away with it doesn’t mean that he wasn’t prepared to do it. This is not “digging up junk,” this is exposing the record on just what type of person Rudy is.
