Al-Qaeda ‘planning big British attack’
The Sunday Times ^ | April 22 2007 | Dipesh Gadher

Posted on 04/22/2007 8:22:17 PM PDT by noname247

AL-QAEDA leaders in Iraq are planning the first “large-scale” terrorist attacks on Britain and other western targets with the help of supporters in Iran, according to a leaked intelligence report.

Spy chiefs warn that one operative had said he was planning an attack on “a par with Hiroshima and Nagasaki” in an attempt to “shake the Roman throne”, a reference to the West.

Another plot could be timed to coincide with Tony Blair stepping down as prime minister, an event described by Al-Qaeda planners as a “change in the head of the company”.

The intelligence report also makes it clear that senior Al-Qaeda figures in the region have been in recent contact with operatives in Britain.

It follows revelations last year that up to 150 Britons had travelled to Iraq to fight as part of Al-Qaeda’s “foreign legion”. A number are thought to have returned to the UK, after receiving terrorist training, to form sleeper cells.

“A member of this network is reportedly involved in an operation which he believes requires AQ Core authorisation. He claims the operation will be on ‘a par with Hiroshima and Naga-saki’ and will ‘shake the Roman throne’. We assess that this operation is most likely to be a large-scale, mass casualty attack against the West.”

Analysts believe the reference to Hiroshima and Naga-saki, where more than 200,000 people died in nuclear attacks on Japan at the end of the second world war, is unlikely to be a literal boast.

“It could be just a reference to a huge explosion,” said a counter-terrorist source. “They [Al-Qaeda] have got to do something soon that is radical otherwise they start losing credibility.”

Interesting that the ridiculous comments below that article are mostly from anti-American “Americans.”

I wonder what Nasty Pelosi would say? Maybe she’d decide to go have a chat with Bin Laden in a cave and we’ll be rid of her.

Good post - you beat me to it.

Although, I'll add this:

Security says al Qaeda group active in Spain

Spain's security service has warned the government that Spain and France are most in danger of being attacked by a north African wing of al-Qaeda and that the group is active in Spain, El Pais reported on Sunday.

Quoting recent reports from intelligence service CNI, El Pais said members of the newly named al-Qaeda Organization in the Islamic Maghreb were working in Spain to raise money and recruit fighters to send to Iraq and training camps in Africa.

Could be an interesting Summer.

I agree with Flavius. What ALASKA suggests is what should be done but it will not be. The Islamo-fascists operate below the level of nation-state yet with the full support of regimes such as Syria and Iran and majorities in the Arab states and Pakistan. It allows attacks to occur on the West without endangering the status and sovereignty of the enabling nations.

The Islamo-fascists operate on the belief that the West will not use its nuclear weaponry against them and therefore they will only be engaged against conventional weapons and armed forces. Realistically, they know that only the US is a threat to them in this regard. They know the West is divided and they will be assisted by the Left in Europe and the US to shackle the exercise of American power necessary to defeat them.

Personally, I think the Sunday Times is about as credible as a toad. They keep coming out with stories like this, and I guess they do sell papers that way. What a world.

What an amazing pattern; bend to their will, and your pain will INCREASE. The Spaniards found out, now the British.

I propose we GLASS OVER MECCA IN A BLINDING WHITE FLASH, and prepare to receive their groveling homage and accolades...!

That's probably incorrect "wanting of the mind"....

Didn't happen after 9-11...and probably wouldn't happen after a similar event in the UK.

We tell them that if anything happens we will target their major supporter(s).
Then the supporters will either intervene to stop the attack or suffer the consequences.
We make the warning public so everyone knows what will happen.
We let everyone know we are not going to tolerate thin nonsense anymore...
