BRUSSELS (Reuters) - Conservative Nicolas Sarkozy and Socialist Segolene Royal are set to contest a French presidential run-off after topping the first-round poll on Sunday, Belgium's Belga news agency said.

Belga quoted first projections which cannot be published in France by law until the last polling stations close at 1800 GMT (7 p.m. British time) as showing Sarkozy and Royal would go through.

Belgium's RTBF radio station said Sarkozy was slightly ahead in the first round.

Will France make an abrupt right turn, politically speaking? Or are they so far left it will be like a oil tanker ship getting buffeted by a gentle breeze?.........

The newly elected President will have 100 days in which he has total power and can basically do anything he wants. Sarko is the kind of leader who would use that power well.

Thanks for the updates!

The problem that I can see for Sarkozy is that he may unite the left behind Royal, wereas Sarkozy will not be able to mop up some of Le Pen’s or Bayrou’s supporters.

Interesting that turnout was so heavy, I’m not sure what to make of it except for voter intensity must be really high in France at the moment, and the undecideds must have split for Sarkozy and made the difference.

If the poll by Ipsos is accurate, the runoff will be Sarko Royal.

Le Pen may be out of the picture for good.

All polls have shown that Sarko picks up about half of Bayrou’s vote, and almost all of le Pen’s. Probably those of Villiers and Nihous as well.

Royal at 26%, even if she captured every single vote on the Left, would not get the 50.1% necessary to win.

What happens if the left unites behind Royal? Will LePen's supporters go to Sarko by default?

Le Pen gave a sort of signal yesterday when he had a few good words to say about Sarko.

If a candidate gets over 50% in the first round, he wins. If no candidate gets 50%, the top two are in the runoff in two weeks.
