JUNEAU -- A proposal for another big construction project is gathering headlines across the world. No, we're not talking about a $30 billion pipeline to send natural gas to the Lower 48. This is bigger: A $10 billion to $12 billion tunnel under the Bering Strait linking Alaska and Russia. And another $50 billion to lay railways to make the tunnel usable.

I’s sure this will have huge economic benefits to us like... uh, let’s see... making us dependent upon Russian gas? Nevermind. Besides, I’ve always wanted to take a road trip to the Russian Far East and Siberia to see the... see the, um... see the... why do they want to build this tunnel again?

That's what they used to say about Route 128 that now encircles Boston. "A road to nowhere" everybody would chortle.

Thirty years later, Route 128 is the lifeblood of the Boston economy. And now it is four lanes in each direction and it is still a snarl for about 10 hours each day.

This is more viable than most think. We are now pretty much at our port capacity in North America, and we will not be building many new ports. In order to increase trade bewteen the old world and the new world, we only have a couple of options. We can increase the port capacity in South America, and rail the cargo up here. Or we can do this, which will circumvent the need for ports entirely.

This might actually be a good idea. Siberia trade could be profitable.

If that tunnel could be built for $12 billion I’ll eat my hat. A billion dollars just doesn’t go as far as it used to. What was the price tag on the big dig again?

why do they want to build this tunnel again?

Transporting goods by rail is a fraction of the cost of by boat.

“I am a free trader and it gives us access to a vast host of resources. I’m all for it.”

Russia will insist that for the benefit of our strategic relationship with them, the tunnel only has lanes to the United States. Democrats will applaud the Soviets, err Russians courageousness.

The Big Dig was in an urban environment, with complexities galore. It had a total length of 161 lane miles (number of lanes times number of miles.)

This Bering Strait tunnel is basically a straight shot, with no existing impediments, for a total length of 64 miles. If it's two lanes (one track each way) then that's fewer lane miles than the Big Dig.

And, as corrupt as Russia is, it might still be less corrupt than Boston.

A wonderful idea!

A fantastic idea!

Construction should begin immediately!

Provided, of course, that the entire project is privately funded!
