It used to be that an adult could go to a drug store and get cough medicine with codeine in it. You just signed for it. Several years ago, on a Saturday evening, I was suffering from a major chest cold. Horrible cough. I just wanted to get some “sauce”, and go to bed. Planned to see the doc on Monday if I needed to.
Druggist refused to sell it to me. I had been a loyal customer there for 15 years. Big argument. Transferred all my scripts the next day.

Don't know how you feel about the failed war on some drugs, but it looks like you're one of the ones who suffer from the "punish the class" policies to keep people from feeling silly in an unapproved way.
I used to take cold pills with pseudoephidrine sometimes, but I'm not going to sign their "kick in my door and make sure I don't have a meth lab" list.
I saved back about 5 pills for an emergency.

You are dreaming, codeine has been a “prescription” drug way before you were even born (I’ll betcha, unless you are 100 years old)
