Account Changes in N.J. Gov. Crash
Associated Press ^ | 04/18/07 | TOM HESTER Jr., Associated Press Writer

It was an ominous tale — an erratic driver in a red pickup racing wildly along the nation's busiest toll road sends the governor's sport utility vehicle careening into a guard rail.

But that story, relayed hours after Gov. Jon S. Corzine was critically injured, has been debunked by a new state police report detailing how his driver was dashing with emergency lights flashing at 91 mph in a 65 mph zone. The alleged erratic driver wasn't a villain but a young man trying to get out of the way of the governor's onrushing SUV.

......

Corzine was heading to the governor's mansion April 12 for a meeting with Don Imus and the Rutgers University women's basketball team when he crashed on the Garden State Parkway north of Atlantic City. His SUV was in the left lane with its emergency lights flashing when a red pickup tried to get out of its way.

But the pickup's right wheels went onto the grassy highway shoulder, and the driver overcorrected, swerving back on the road. That set off a chain reaction: A white pickup truck swerved to avoid the red truck, struck Corzine's sport utility vehicle and sent it careening into a guard rail.

Initial spin turned out to be quite unfair to the driver of the red pickup truck, who was just trying to make a split second decision about what to do as emergency lights appeared at 90+ mph in his rear view mirror. I haven't been on the Garden State Parkway in quite a few years, but it always used to be a relatively narrow "parkway" built in the 1930s long before the standards of the interstate system -- thus it was an especially dangerous place to be driving at 90+ mph, as the reference to a grassy shoulder in the article suggests...... the story could well have turned out to be the deaths of innocent drivers and/or passengers in other vehicles caused by the gov's reckless motorcade.

I called right after it happened. Corzine’s motorcade barreled up the GSP faster than people could get out of the way. This story is growing legs.

This epitomizes the sad state of affairs in this democratic strongheld.

The Garbage State Parkway was o.k. when it was built, I guess, but even in the 70s it was too narrow and had bad sight lines.

My husband used to drive up it any day he didn't take the train to work.

I could see how somebody could be VERY surprised by an overtaking vehicle doing 90 plus. If you were on one of those short curves, you wouldn't see it until it was right on top of you.

Yes, great minds..... as soon as I’d read it happened on GSP I wondered aloud about the speed of the Gov’s motorcade, whether any vehicle(s) hit a soft shoulder at high speed, etc. That’s a much worse roadway for driving 90+ mph in dim conditions (and wet, from what I’ve read) than any Interstate..... lucky there weren’t more serious injuries or even deaths. Sympathy to the Gov who’s the only critical injured plus the usual MSM bias has been preventing a serious look at the circumstances. Hope the state police will be forced to do a real investigation and report, but of course in a corrupt cesspool like NJ that’s always an iffy matter......

The Police Officers involved probably have come to recognize the fact that they really do not have to ally themselves with the Governor’s Spin Meisters.

The truth shall set you free.

Yes, it was “modern” in the 1930s but quite narrow and winding by standards of the later Interstate Highway system. NY, CT, and NJ have some of those 1930s era “parkways” with bad shoulders, low narrow stone bridges, bad sight lines and curves, etc. They were good 70 years ago compared to the alternatives, but they are quite substandard for any driving over 40-50 mph.

We have the elite and the masses. Corzine clearly considers him among the former, completely and totally above the law. And I bet he doesn't pay a single dime for any element of the laws he broke, unlike a whole bunch of plebian Joiseyites, at least some of whom elected this piece of work.

The police may be thinking what an old pol said when asked why so few people showed up at Frank Hague's funeral . . .

"When the Big Guy is gone, he can't do anything for anybody."

. . . could be the motto for New Jersey.

What I would like to see .......

A reporter should get all the EZ-Pass toll records for Corzines vehicle for the last year. Then calculate speed between toll booth receipts.

I bet we find the crippled Governor usually travels 100 plus. That 91 was a slow day.

Then gather same info on all governors, and find the most abusive scum who has been putting our lives at risk.

Where was the emergency? Isnt it against the law to use emergency equipment for non emergency situations?

The poor kid in the Red Pick up. I bet he was scared to death on the highway.

Then scared to death he would be prosecuted.

Then Insulted, with the state police saying he was not intelligent enough to know he caused the crashed, so they let him go.

That kid is now having the last laugh!!!!

Further, I'll bet he hangs it all on the trooper who was driving. I can see Corzine ranting "Screw the traffic!! Step on it dammit, I GOTTA get to that Imus interview!!!"

I sent Corzines office my condolences yesterday.

I signed my letter “Speed Racer”, and I challenged the Guv to a race when he gets better.
