Judaism has generally viewed Ishmael as wicked though repentant.[1] Islamic tradition, however, has a very positive view of Ishmael, ascribing a larger role to Ishmael in comparison to the Bible and viewing him as a prophet and the son of sacrifice (according to certain early theologians whose ideas prevailed later). The Bahá'í writings consider him a lesser prophet.

Both Jewish and Islamic traditions consider Ishmael as the ancestor of Arab people

Ishmael was the son of Hagar. She planned to leave him in the desert to die but God told her no. I believe Ishmael is the patriarch of the muslim line.

Google says Ismail was one of the Prophets, saved by Mohammad, who continues to call the people to Allah.

I am curious if the purple cap this kid wore was a skull cap often seen worn by Muslim men?

"Both Jewish and Islamic traditions consider Ishmael as the ancestor of Arab people..."

I may be assuming to much, but can't we assume after four years of college as an "English" major, the killer could make a simple spelling distinction.

"Ismial" not = "Ishmael"

"Ismial" is exclusively a Muslim spelling of a common Muslim name.

You said — “Both Jewish and Islamic traditions consider Ishmael as the ancestor of Arab people”

The whole Ishmael and Isaac thing is very interesting and fundamental as far as the Bible versus the Koran is concerned.

BUT, in having to do with yesterday’s shooting — it’s entirely speculative and actually doesn’t even represent the *right spelling* as far as the article has given it to us.

I think people are jumping on something that has not been established at all. We’ll have to wait until the note is released and we see what it actually says in context.
